SONOMA COUNTY -- Authorities in Sonoma County on Monday confirmed that one person died in a brush fire that burned 63 acres west of Petaluma.The incident, named the Roblar Fire, was first reported at around 2:30 near the intersection of Roblar Road and Valley Ford Road in the town of Bloomfield.The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office confirmed early Monday evening that a person had died in the fire. Two men arrested for allegedly toting ghost guns while drunk in public

A call about a suspicious person carrying a gun led to two arrests for alleged unlawful firearm possession, according to the Kings County Sheriff’s Office. Around 4:30 in the morning on Sunday, June 19, deputies responded to the area of Alkali Drive and Jersey Avenue; Tribal Police had reported a person with a gun tucked into his waistband behaving antagonistically at the front gate of the Santa Rosa Rancheria, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Organizers of the World's Ugliest Dog Contest in Petaluma announced the 17-year-old Mr. Happy Face, adopted in August 2021 by Arizona woman Janeda Banelly, was named the 2022 World's Ugliest Dog.

No Petaluma Fireworks Show for the 4th of July

The annual Fourth of July fireworks show at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma won’t happen this year. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department cancelled the show, blaming the drought and climate concerns, and issues with the fireworks operator. Officials say there have been issues with the supply chain, and with the operator fulfilling contractual obligations for the past several weeks and months. The Petaluma Parks and Recreation Department says it’s exploring alternative ways to celebrate the Fourth of July. Petaluma has banned all fireworks since June of 2020.

Ming-Tung “Mike” Lee Appointed Interim President of Sonoma State University

California State University (CSU) Interim Chancellor Jolene Koester has appointed Ming-Tung “Mike" Lee, Ph.D., to serve as interim president of Sonoma State University (SSU). Over a career that spanned 28 years at Sacramento State, Lee held a number of leadership roles including vice president for Administration and Business Affairs/chief financial officer as well as interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs prior to retiring in 2018. Since then, Lee has held emeritus status on the campus as a professor of Business Administration. Lee will assume the leadership of SSU on August 1, 2022, after the departure of current president Dr. Judy K. Sakaki, who is resigning from the presidency effective July 31, 2022.

Cotati Post Office to be Renamed After the Pasta King

The late Pasta King will officially have a post office named after him. Last week, President Biden signed a bill to rename the Cotati Post Office after Art Ibleto. Congressman Mike Thompson, who sponsored the bill, said in a statement “This will honor Art’s tremendous life and cement his legacy and contributions to our community.” A date for the renaming ceremony has not yet been set. Ibleto, who died at the age of 94 in 2020, immigrated from Italy and brought the community different types of pasta with the help of his wife, Vicki, who has also passed on. Together, they built a small business empire which included Art’s Place in Rohnert Park and the Spaghetti Palace at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds. He also used his food to help raise money for countless charitable, educational and civic groups.

The bar was high at the World’s Ugliest Dog contest this year, but this hairless creature with a crooked face, toothless smile and white mohawk emerged as the winner. Mr. Happy Face is a 17-year-old Chinese crested-Chihuahua mix. Adopted in August last year, this canine came from a hoarder’s house and had suffered through abuse and neglect, the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds and Event Center website stated.
