VSP investigating inmate death at regional jail

DUFFIELD, Va. (WYMT) - State authorities are investigating an inmate’s death at the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Duffield. The Virginia State Police said its Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Wytheville Field Office launched an investigation into the May 20 death of inmate Sherri D. Cook, 43 of Whitesburg, Kentucky.

The Ozark County Sheriff’s Office is currently searching for a missing 14 year old female. Haley Strain was last seen at 10:00 pm on Thursday, June 23, 2022 at a residence in the Lick Creek area. Haley is 5’4″ tall, 110 lbs. with dark red hair. She has her belly button pierced, ears pierced and a possible nose ring.

Wise County budget heads to final vote July 1

Police Searching for Suspect in a Jewelry Store Robbery in Pikeville

The Pikeville Police Department is searching for a suspect that stole from a jewelry store. Police said the man walked into Kay Jewelers in Pikeville Wednesday afternoon. Reports say the man asked to see merchandise from a case and walked out with nearly $4,000 worth of jewelry. Police said he got into a gold or silver early 2000′s Toyota Camry. Family releases name of Kentucky Power worker who died on the job

HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Update: We have learned the name of the Kentucky Power worker who died. The family said Wallace “Woo” Melton Jr., 58, was killed Thursday morning. Perry County Sheriff Joe Engle says that around 4:00 a.m. Thursday morning, Melton was in his Kentucky Power truck on the right fork of Maces Creek in the Viper area when he went over an embankment.

Wise county officials say Appalachia will continue to get fire, emergency services

WISE — Appalachia residents will continue to see fire and emergency medical service coverage despite a disagreement over Wise County funding for the department. Wise County Administrator Mike Hatfield on Thursday released a statement saying that the Appalachia Fire and Rescue organization has told county and Appalachia town officials that it will cease emergency medical service coverage in the town and adjacent county response zone after July 2.
