West Virginia announces plans for new expressway connection

WELCH, W.Va. (AP) — Gov. Jim Justice visited the site of a planned $147 million highway project that will connect Welch to the Coalfields Expressway.The five-mile stretch of highway is expected to be completed in 2026."This announcement today means we are one step closer to bringing this area of West Virginia to the world once and for all," Justice said in a media release. "We have waited and waited in southern West Virginia for way too long."Justice announced Friday that Bizzack Construction of Lexington, Kentucky, won the bid to build the new highway.The governor's office said plans are in the works to build a five-mile stretch of the Coalfields Expressway from Mullens to Twin Falls State Park, and a three-mile link from Twin Falls toward Pineville.The four-lane Coalfields Expressway that runs from Raleigh County to Wyoming County opened in 2020.

West Virginia Turnpike upgrade getting finishing touches

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — The finishing touches on a six-lane upgrade of the West Virginia Turnpike in Beckley are getting underway and expected to last about eight weeks.The $140 million widening project on the eight-mile stretch was finished last fall, but final paving and striping were delayed to allow holiday traffic to have full access on the heavily traveled road.Paving and striping will take place between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. to minimize impact on motorists, said Jeff Miller, executive director of the West Virginia Parkways Authority. Delays should be expected until the work is complete.The speed limit in the zone will be 55 mph, the state Department of Transportation said. Miller said it will be strictly enforced."It's a very, very busy area, and we just don't want anything bad to happen to anybody," he said.

WVU Tech graduates first culinary students

Beckley, (W.Va.) - WVU Tech is celebrating its first two graduates of the hospitality (culinary) program from the Beckley campus. The hospitality (culinary) program is a two-year associate degree offered through WVU Potomac State College on the Tech campus in Beckley. Ashley Isaacs of Fayetteville, West Virginia and Emma Keppe of Beckley, West Virginia are the first class from the program, which began on Tech’s campus in 2020. Both Isaacs and Keppe said they had always wanted to go to culinary school, but there wasn’t anywhere locally they could pursue that. When the program launched in Beckley, they both made the transition to WVU Tech. “It makes me feel so good to see people enjoy the things I make,” says Isaacs. “It feels like I am where I’m supposed to be.” Both students have secured internships this summer. Isaacs will be interning at Glade Springs Resort, while Keppe will be moving to Morgantown to complete her internship at the Cupcakerie.
