Improving outdoor attractions is a worthy priority

On Thursday, the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce announced plans for a new 3-mile foot and bike path called the Wolf Creek Connector Trail. It will link Wolf Creek’s South Trailhead to paths on PP Highway. Once completed, residents can walk from Westwood Boulevard to the 20-plus miles of Wolf Creek Trails, and eventually into Mark Twain National Forest.

Truck fire on Business 67 and Highway W

Poplar Bluff city and Butler County firefighters responded at 11 a.m. Thursday to a tractor trailer fire at the intersection of Business Highway 67 north, Barron Road and Highway W. The vehicle’s brakes caught fire, said Poplar Bluff Battalion Chief Roy Lane. The fire then entered the trailer, which was loaded with pickles. The driver was able to drive the truck away from the trailer, and limit the spread of the fire. The vehicle was cleared from the scene and the road reopened shortly after the fire was extinguished. Butler County Health Department, Poplar Bluff Police Department and the state fire marshal were also at the scene.

Malden Police warn about AirTag trackers

The Malden Police Department is warning the public about tracking devices. The department took another report about an “AirTag” tracking device being placed on someone’s vehicle, unknowingly. They are not trying to alarm people, but would like you to be aware of how easily someone can track your whereabouts. You should periodically check your property. The department also included a message to the individual that placed the tracker on their Facebook Page. The message said, “We have your “AirTag” now, and because it was actively tracking, you know where it’s being secured, but in the event you don’t, Malden Police is located at 800 Eastern Ave., Malden, MO.”

Robert (Bob) Dean McAtee

Robert (Bob) Dean McAtee, 75, of Madison AL, Madsion County, and formerly of Advance, MO, passed away Wednesday, June 15, 2022, at UAB Hospital, in Birmingham, AL. He was born in Smith Center, KS on September 11, 1946, to parents Ralph L. and Jacqueline (Netz) McAtee. Bob was a loving father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was most proud to be a Vietnam Veteran,and served his country in the US Navy for over 20 years. He was a lifelong member of the VFW Post 3416, Wappapello, MO and more recently the VFW Post 2702 in Huntsville, AL. He looked forward to the annual AOE Sailors Association convention with his Navy buddies every year. He also was a member of the Mobile Riverine Force Association.

Activities will include a 5K run/walk that starts at 7:04 a.m., the Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show by The Capaha Antique Car Club from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sycamore Lane, mud volleyball at 9 a.m. at Pavilion 1, golf ball drop at 4:30 p.m. at Legion Baseball Field, The Quarantine Band at 7 p.m. at Nick Leist Memorial Band Shell, Jackson Municipal Band Concert at 8 p.m. also at the band shell and fireworks at 9:30 p.m. at City Park. Food stands and a beer garden will also be set up at Parkview Drive starting at 9 a.m.
