Sturgeon Bay Police issues warnings about fireworks

You could pay for a citation or worse if you are caught shooting certain fireworks without a permit. The Sturgeon Bay Police Department issued its annual warning on Wednesday after receiving complaints about fireworks over the last few weeks, including three in the last seven days. Fireworks that leave the ground such as firecrackers, roman candles, bottle rockets, and mortars are illegal to use without the proper paperwork. Sparklers, stationary cones, and fountains, smoke bombs, caps and others that spin or move on the ground are allowed, but you should still be careful. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says there were 1500 injuries involving firecrackers and 1100 injuries with sparklers in 2021. Over the last 15 years, there has been a 25 percent increase in fireworks-related injuries. To add insult to injury, citations could cost you hundreds of dollars and possibly thousands more if the fireworks you fire off damage someone else’s property.

Paul and PJ Billing are about to launch their unusual, steel sailing vessel

A retired ship-construction inspector from Sturgeon Bay is getting ready to put his unusual, 70-foot-long dream boat back into the water for the first time in three decades. Paul Billing built a model of a Chinese junk as a child, and then partly from that vision, he fabricated and outfitted his sailing and motorized vessel, Deo Gratis, during the 1980s. He started his project in 1984 when he bought 15 tons of steel. Then he sailed the boat and lived on it – sometimes in Florida while working for Marathon Oil, and later while working as a cargo inspector. He shipped it north when he landed a job in 1989 for the American Bureau of Shipping around the Midwest and Great Lakes, and he kept it in Indiana until 17 years ago.

Pride Flag Theft an Ordinance Violation, Not a Crime

LGBTQIA+ Pride flags were stolen from multiple locations in Sturgeon Bay last week in advance of Open Door Pride’s annual event. The thefts constitute an ordinance violation, not a crime, because the stolen flags don’t match the monetary level of a misdemeanor crime, said Sturgeon Bay Police Department Assistant Chief of Police Dan Brinkman. Sturgeon Bay adopts most Wisconsin statutes, one of which states that theft under $100 does not warrant a criminal charge. Instead, the perpetrators, if caught, could receive a petty-theft citation.
