Fayette County Coroner Investigating Death Of Rural St. Elmo Woman

The Fayette County Coroner is investigating the death of a rural St. Elmo woman. Fayette County Coroner David Harris says that early Wednesday morning he was contacted by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office of a death north of St. Elmo. Coroner Harris says, upon arrival at the scene, he pronounced 33 year old Elizabeth Strange dead.

Two rounds of storms roll through on Thursday, NWS looking for damage information

We saw two rounds of severe storms make their way through the area on Thursday. The first round came during the 1 pm hour and brought heavy rain, very strong winds and potentially some hail to different areas. The second round came during the 6 pm and into the 7 pm hour and brought much the same to the area. The area was under Severe Thunderstorm Warnings in both storms, with the northwestern part of Fayette County falling under a Tornado Warning for a period of time due to a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado. There were reports of some trees down and tree limbs down. As of this time, no reports of major damage—although more may come to light in the daytime today.

Fayette Co Coroner says 2 recent deaths in St. Elmo “Totally Unrelated”

The Fayette County Coroner says the 2 recent deaths of young individuals in St. Elmo are “totally unrelated.”. Fayette County Coroner David Harris says that he’s aware of there being some concern in St. Elmo as there have been two deaths of young individuals in the community in recent weeks. But, Coroner says he wants the St. Elmo community to know that these two cases are totally unrelated to each other and that autopsies were necessary to determine the exact cause of death for both.

Dollar General is coming to Brownstown

The Village of Brownstown will soon be getting their own Dollar General. Ground has been broken on the project along U.S. Route 40 just west of the Fayette County Fairgrounds. Brownstown Village President Ginny Wilber says it’s been a long time coming and they are excited about the store coming to town.

Two construction projects starting this week in Fayette County

Two construction projects are scheduled to get started this week, potentially today, in Fayette County. One construction project begins on Monday on U.S. Route 51. The Illinois Department of Transportation told Cromwell Media-Vandalia that there will be a 7.5 mile resurfacing project starting on Monday from the 51/40 intersection south to just south of Shobonier Road. I-DOT add that project includes patching, milling and two lifts of hot mix asphalt. Traffic will be maintained using flaggers and the project is expected to be completed in late August.

Ribbon cutting, grand opening ceremony held for This-N-That

The Greater Fayette County Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Thursday for This-N-That, 120 N. Fifth St. Owner Karen Sharp said she first opened a storefront near McDonald’s last July. Sharp had always had an entrepreneurial spirit and picked up selling different kinds of items from home because it gave her the ability to stay home with her children.

Fayette County Board Handles Several Items at May Meeting

The Fayette County Board moved through several agenda items during its monthly meeting for May on Tuesday. Before getting to action items on the agenda, the board heard a short update from Georgianne Broughton, the Executive Director of the Community Resource Center. Broughton discussed steps and service enhancements that the center was able to move forward with through money provided by the board. On hand with Broughton were two of the specialists hired for the center to help with its substance abuse treatment services. Broughton updated ways they have been able to help 36 individuals through the community so far with the funding including helping with financial budgeting, securing housing, getting to treatment centers and services to help them secure and maintain employment.

More roadwork on I-70 in Fayette County begins one week from today

More roadwork is coming to Interstate 70 in Fayette County, starting one week from today. The work will lead to lane reduction/lane closures according to the Illinois Department of Transportation website and will begin on May 16th and has a current completion date of July 31st. The work will be from mile post 60 (1 mile west of the western Vandalia exit) to mile post 74 (2 miles west of St. Elmo). The I-DOT information says to expect lane restrictions for roadway improvement and to expect delays during this time.

There will be a Drive Thru Food Giveaway on Saturday morning. The giveaway will be at Conagra Brands at 1000 Brewbaker Drive in St. Elmo at 10 am. It is open to residents of Fayette County, no registration is required and no financial eligibility requirements.

Warrant issued for Ramsey man in the 2021 case of attacking Sheriff’s Deputy

FAYETTE COUNTY, IL — A bench warrant was issued Tuesday in Fayette County Court for a 34-year-old Ramsey man charged in a 2021 case with attacking sheriff’s deputies who had responded to a domestic battery report. Jackie Matherly was ordered at a court hearing last month to report to probation that day for drug testing and another hearing was scheduled for May 3. However, according to court records, Matherly failed to report for that test.
