Suspect shot by police following overnight home invasion in Mt. Vernon

JEFFERSON COUNTY - Police are investigating after a home invasion in Mount Vernon led to an officer involved shooting overnight. According to a news release from the Mount Vernon Police Department, at 11:54 p.m. Saturday night, officers responded to a residence in the 2600 block of Wescott Street for the report of an armed home invasion.


(OLNEY) The Olney Rotary Club is continuing with its “Olney Clean & Green” event, now through next Thursday, June 30th. Many of the city’s 66 routes for the litter pick up are still available for individuals, families, churches, 4-H groups, or others to clean up. With gloves and trash bags available at the main branches of the First National Bank and TrustBank, filled trash bags can be left in the city dumpster in the Olney City Hall parking lot off of Whittle Avenue. Bailey Team Makes Stop in Carmi Thursday

After trips to Carmi, Mt. Carmel, McLeansboro and more yesterday (Thursday), the Darren Bailey for Governor team remains in the region on the candidate’s 102 counties in 14 days tour. While Bailey himself remained in the Chicago area to prepare for a final debate, running mate Stephanie Trussell is speaking to crowds to help shore up support ahead of Tuesday’s primary.

2022 06/26 – Allene Frances Anderson

Allene Frances Anderson passed away to be with Jesus, on June 21, 2022. She was born June 17, 1918, to her parents, Elizabeth (Munro) and Alva Black. When she was seven and a half years old her mother died from a tragic fire at the Methodist Children’s Home in Mount Vernon. Here dad was in WWII in France and this affected him. On her death bed, Elizabeth told her mom to take Allene. Allie and John Munro raised Allene from that time. Allene took piano lessons for one year when she was nine years old. At ten, she started giving lessons to some of her friends. When she was twelve, she started washing and setting the hair of some adult friends and neighbors. Allene attended Bonnie Grade School and three years of High School. She then went to Kankakee and lived with an aunt to finish her senior year. One year later, she moved to Chicago to live with another aunt and went to Beauty Culture School.

Car Stolen in Enfield

On Thursday morning Reporting Officer George Spencer responded to Enfield Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after receiving report of an employee’s vehicle having been stolen from the parking lot. Ruth Barger was the one making the report, stating that her silver 2004 Toyota RAV4 had been stolen from the parking lot sometime between 5AM and 8:30AM. She reported that she did not give anyone permission to remove the vehicle, and that she did not know who may have taken it. Barger signed a probable cause complaint for Theft Over $500, and an incident report was placed on file at the White County Sheriff’s Department.

(OLNEY) Carle Richland Memorial Hospital will be working several of its campus parking lots and road ways next week, Monday through Saturday (6/27–7/2). Each area will take two days to seal and re-strip, leaving some entrances and parking lots to CRMH in accessible at certain times. The first area of work this coming Monday and Tuesday will have parking lots B and C, located off of East Street and the Scott Street entrance to the Rehab Building will be closed. Patients and visitors will need to access parking lot A from East Street or use the Mill Street entrance using the west parking lot. Those going to the Rehab Building will need to use the Mill Street entrance on Monday and Tuesday. The work next Wednesday and Thursday will include the Emergency Department entrances, plus more later next week on Friday and Saturday. More will be announced next week. Thanks for your patience.

Rosemary “Rosie” Murphy, 89

Rosemary “Rosie” Murphy, age 89, of Olney, Illinois, passed away Wednesday afternoon, June 22, 2022, at Vandalia Rehabilitation & Health Care Center. She was born April 17, 1933, in Clifford, Illinois, the daughter of Felice and Ruth May (Grasty) Coriasco. She was united in marriage to Paul “Jewels” Murphy Jr. on June 30, 1953, and together they shared 50 wedding anniversaries until his death February 9, 2004.

Theft Reported in Crossville

On Wednesday Deputy Jordan Weiss spoke with Bradley Hurt about a report of stolen property. Hurt’s full gas can was taken from his property on 306 Richards Street in Crossville sometime between Monday the 20th and Wednesday the 23rd. A report was filed for Theft Under $500, no further information about this incident has been made available at this time.

Library hosts movie night and game day

The C.E. Brehm Memorial Public Library in Mt. Vernon offers a variety of classes and special presentations. Below are some of their upcoming events. Family Movie Night will be held on June 24. Kids must be accompanied by an adult and adults must be accompanied by a kid. Because of the licensing agreement they can’t advertise what movies they will be showing, so call 618-242-6322 to find out the movie being shown. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Movie starts at 7 p.m.

Salem JV Wildcats Sweep Visiting Mount Vernon

The Salem JV Wildcats swept visiting Mt Vernon in summer baseball action at SCHS Field. Salem won the opener 4-3. Trailing 2-0 in the third inning, Salem scored a pair to tie it and then plated two more in the fourth to earn the win. Cooper Lobek and Jackson Green drove in runs, Rhett Detering added 2 hits, Braden Rector and Aden Bass added hits with Keaton Gullion walking twice and scoring both times. Ayden Rose was the winning pitcher going 5 innings allowing 5 hits and 1 earned run with 6 strikeouts and 5 walks.
