Weber Represents Keota on Academic All State

One Keota softball player was recently recognized at the state level for her work in the classroom. Sky Weber was named to the academic all state softball team by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association. To be eligible, a student athlete must have had a cumulative GPA of 3.85 or higher. The senior first baseman recorded a .242 on base percentage, brought in four runs, and recorded two extra base hits.

Willis and Duwa to Compete in Shrine Bowl Saturday

The 49th annual Iowa Shrine Bowl is just a few days away and a couple Southeast Iowa football players will suit up for their respective school one final time. Washington’s Trashaun Willis and Sigourney-Keota’s Brady Duwa will be a part of the south team in a game that will feature some of the best talent in the entire state. The game is not only an all-star contest for graduating seniors, but a charity event to help raise money for The Shriner’s Hospitals for Children. To date, this game has raised over $2,760,000 in its nearly 50 years of existence. Players have a week full of practice, events for hospital children and their parents, and a parade all leading up to the game.

Washington Softball Puts Six on All SEC

The Southeast Conference handed out postseason softball awards and six Washington players were named to the all conference teams. Kellie Dallmeyer and Ella Greiner headlined the selections being named to the first team. Dallmeyer had an illustrious Demon career and this year led the SEC with a .529 batting average. The senior catcher scored 48 times, brought in 43 tallies, recorded a .621 on base percentage, led the league with 111 total bases, and broke a school record with eight home runs. Greiner busted onto the scene in her eighth grade season by recording a .525 OBP that featured 30 walks, collected 21 RBI, came around to score 31 times, and played a solid left field.

No. 4 Golden Hawks End Season in Substate Final

The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball team came up one win short of a return trip to the state tournament Tuesday when they fell to Davis County 7-4 in the class 2A substate six final at Dick Sojka Memorial Field in Washington. In a game heard on AM and FM KCII, the Mustangs capitalized on chances early, scoring a pair in the first inning on two walks, three wild pitches and a double from Noah Zmolek. The Golden Hawks countered with a single run in the bottom half when Keegan Gingerich singled in Kayden Reinier. Davis County kept the pressure on scoring once more in the second and twice in the third, chasing Golden Hawk starter Aidan Rath after two and a third innings and holding a 5-1 advantage.
