Proposed sales tax increase, redistricting and more news happening today

Here’s a look at some of the stories we’ll be following today as they make headlines across Southwest Virginia:. The Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors will meet today. It will get a presentation on the proposed one percent sales tax, which would go to school construction. As we’ve reported, a similar resolution, presented to voters last year, failed by 23 votes. The question could go before voters again in November.

Liberty football projected depth chart entering summer

Classes are out for the summer and the Liberty Flames football team has completely shifted its focus to the start of the 2022 season. The Flames are scheduled to open the season on September 3 at Southern Miss before their home opener on Sept. 10 against UAB. It is the most anticipated home schedule in program history, with the Flames also welcoming BYU and Virginia Tech to Williams Stadium in Lynchburg, Virginia.

State Police confirm Pamplin man died in two-vehicle crash

At 4:21 p.m. on Tuesday,May 10, Virginia State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 460 close to a quarter-mile west of Spruce Road. A 2016 Yamaha moped was traveling east on Route 460 in the right lane when it was struck in the rear by a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

LYNCHBURG, Va. (WSET) — The number of intentional law enforcement deaths is on the rise across the country. The Lynchburg Police Dept. took time to honor them Monday night. "It’s important we recognize the officers, the brave, women and men of law enforcement who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Our officers are out in the community each and every day doing incredible work and putting their lives on the line. So, when those officers are killed in the line of duty, we want to make sure we do everything we can to honor them and their families as well," Lynchburg Chief of Police. Ryan Zuidema, said.

Man cited after being caught with loaded handguns at Roanoke airport

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ/TSA Release) - A man from Bedford County was cited by police after Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers stopped him from carrying two loaded handguns onto his flight Sunday at Roanoke-Blacksburg Regional Airport. Both were semi-automatic handguns, according to TSA, one loaded with six bullets and the other with seven bullets.
