Weed Rodeo helps restore landscape along Flathead River

When one knapweed plant has 30,000 seeds that will remain viable for up to 25 years, ridding the shoreline of them and other noxious weeds is a daunting task. But Brenda Guzman, a Whitefish resident and founder of the River Weed Rodeo, has been tackling it for nearly 20 years. The Weed Rodeo is an annual noxious weed pulling event on the Middle Fork of the Flathead River that Guzman started in 2003 when she was working as the operations manager of Wild River Adventures, a rafting company in West Glacier. Guzman said she got the idea for the Weed Rodeo after reading...

Columbia Falls needs 'sensible' housing development

The recent passing of Bill Shaw brings to mind Bill being the last farmer to put up hay from the 49 acres along River Road east of Columbia Falls. That open field now is destined to become high-density, three-story apartment buildings and row houses for 1,200 residents within the Columbia Falls city limits. The Upper Flathead Neighborhood Association (UFNA) is opposed to this proposal as submitted by James Barnett, who also is building similar apartment structures at the Silverbrook subdivision north of Kalispell along U.S. 93 and Church Drive. That is what the open space along the Flathead River will...

Frightening Evening on a Montana Lake Ends Without Tragedy

At over five square miles and depths exceeding 200 feet in some areas, it is big enough to command your attention while out in a boat. Fortunately, getting so much recreational pressure this time of year usually means you're not far from other watercraft should you find yourself in distress. That was the situation this week that no doubt aided in the rescue of five people whose boat sank on Whitefish Lake in northwest Montana.
