Edward J. Lakies

Edward J Lakies (EJ), age 85, passed away on May 5, 2021 in Marysville, Washington. Ed was born to Arthur and NIne (Smith) Lakies on August 21, 1935 in Cadillac. He was raised in Cadillac and graduated with the class of 1953. Growing up in Cadillac, he worked as a newspaper carrier for the Cadillac Evening News, also at Caberfae as ski patrol and at the boat dock on the canal. Ed was an enthusiastic drag race car driver most of his life and worked at restoring race cars and other vehicles. He got his start working on cars at Cy's Body Shop in Cadillac.

Parks proposal could end six decades of boy scout traditions

GREEN TOWNSHIP — A proposal to close camping at the White Pine Valley Recreational Area has been met with contention from some Mecosta County residents. Mecosta County obtained the land from the Department of Natural Resources in the late 1950s, Green Township supervisor Jim Chapman told the Pioneer. In 1964, the county board of supervisors, predecessor to the board of commissioners, passed a motion that the land be designated to the youth of Mecosta County.

13 Manistee County businesses aided by grant program

MANISTEE — A total of $57,000 has been distributed to 13 small businesses in Manistee County with nine or fewer employees to help their recovery from COVID-19. A total of $137,000 in grant funds was requested through 30 grant applications, more than double the amount of funding available. Ten of the 13 businesses were female-owned and three were owned by military veterans., according to a news release.
