Wilma Lucile Cook, age 76, died September 3, 2021 in her own home as she wished. Wilma was born in Drain, Oregon to William and Alice Traylor on August 8, 1945. She graduated from Drain High School in 1963 and went on to complete an associate’s degree at Southern Oregon College.

Frances Naomi Babcock, 97, of Sweet Home, died on the morning of Sept. 4, 2021, in Lebanon. She was born March 15, 1924 in Masontown, Pa., to Edmund and Ruth (Lee) Durr. Growing up during the Great Depression, she learned to work hard at a very young age, but retained a cheerful, hopeful disposition her entire life.

James H. Horton

James H. Horton, 93, of Cottage Grove, Oregon passed away on Sunday, August 8, 2021, from complications of surgery. He was born on June 9, 1928, in Cheyenne Wells, Colorado to Harvey and Ester (Anderson) Horton. James was one of ten siblings, all who have preceded him in death. James was in the United States Army for eight years. He then worked for the Boeing aircraft company and the State of California Public School Employee System. He moved to Cottage Grove and lived with his uncle until his uncle’s death. He was a member of Delight Valley Church of Christ and attended until he no longer could drive. Jim’s cooking specialty was preparing a dozen Deviled Eggs to take to potlucks and other dinners. He always thought the eggs could be improved; however, there were never any leftovers. Jim loved to grow a garden to share with his friends and neighbors. His yard was always immaculate, green and full of flowers that he also shared with people. James will be cremated, and his ashes will be tossed into the Pacific Ocean (his words). A memorial service will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church at 11:00AM on September 11, 2021.

Rod Arthur Vigil, 63, of Cottage Grove passed away August 28, 2021. Rod was born in Monte Vista, Colorado to parents Rudy and Sara Lobato Vigil. Rod was an avid sports fan, who loved spending time with his family. He loved John Wayne movies and playing games with his grandchildren. He married Linda Flanders August 8, 15,2009 in Cottage Grove. Rod worked taking care of developmentally disabled adults most of his life. He is survived by his wife, Linda; his mother, Sara Vigil of Madras, OR; his daughter Ebba Vigil of Creswell, OR; son Rudy (Tonja) Vigil of Jefferson, Oregon; son Kyle (Jenny) Flanders of Eugene, OR; son Justin Flanders of Eugene, OR; son Timothy Vigil of Cottage Grove, OR; brother Robert Vigil of Springfield, OR; brother Richard Vigil of Madras, OR; sister Susan Vigil of Madras, OR; sister Sandra Vigil of Redding, CA; brother Ralph Vigil of Antelope, CA; and 14 grandchildren. Services will be Friday September 10, 2021 at 6th & Gibbs Church, Cottage Grove. Arrangements in the care of Smith-Lund-Mills Funeral Chapel in Cottage Grove.

Jerry Everett Maddux

Jerry Everett Maddux 78, of Cottage Grove, OR, passed away on September 1, 2021, peacefully at home with his wife by his side. Jerry was born February 8, 1943, in Bisbee, AZ. He grew up in Tucson, AZ. After graduating from high school, he joined the Navy and became an airplane mechanic. He served on the USS Midway during the Vietnam war. With an honorary discharge from the Navy, he went to work at United Airlines as a mechanic on the airplanes. When they went on strike one time, he started building furniture & cabinets, and found out he really liked that type of work. One day he saw an ad in the San Francisco newspaper, a cabinet shop for sale in Cottage Grove, OR. He got the map out to see where it was. He flew up here and ended up buying the cabinet shop. He left United Airlines 13 years to the day from when he started.

May 20, 1957 - Aug. 30, 2021. Timothy Leroy Bear, 64, of Sweet Home, went home to his Lord and Savior on Aug. 30, 2021 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Corvallis. Tim, the eldest son of Clarence Eldon and Lorraine Bear, was born on May 20, 1957 in Riverton, Wyo. He graduated from Kaycee High School (Wyoming) in 1975.

Jerry Dale Phillips was born April 15, 1951 in Norton, Virginia to Ray and Beulah Phillips and passed away July 20, 2021 at Riverbend hospital in Springfield, Oregon. Jerry grew up in the little town of Pound, Virginia. Jerry always had a favorite memory or funny story to share about the time spent with his friends and family in Pound. He often spoke of swimming at the reservoir, eating at Robo’s, getting bologna at Gracie’s, drive-in theaters and numerous adventures with his brothers and close friend, Tony Paragon of Proctorville, Ohio.

Richard John Zoll, 93, of Cottage Grove, loved hunting and fishing with his wife LaDonna. Their favorite fishing spot was Odell Lake. They married April 10, 1954 and shared 61 years together until LaDonna passed away in 2015. Richard worked for Weyerhaeuser as a mill wright until age 63 and then he went to work for Grable Gear until he was 84 years old. When he was not working, he was tending his garden. He was a member of the Elks Club in Cottage Grove. He passed away August 17, 2021.
