Essex man arrested for OWI

(Essex) – An Essex man faces charges following his arrest early Saturday morning. The Shenandoah Police Department says officers conducted a traffic stop near the intersection of Highway 48 and North Avenue in Essex around 1:30 a.m. Following an investigation, officers arrested 44-year-old Robert Edward Anderson on a charge of OWI – second offense.

Tabor man arrested on Page County charges

(Shenandoah) – A Tabor man faces charges from two separate incidents. The Shenandoah Police Department says officers served a Page County warrant around 12:30 p.m. Saturday to 29-year-old James Michael Cruz for failure to appear on a scheduled court date. Officers also charged Cruz with 4th degree criminal mischief, stemming from a different incident and investigation.

Grants will provide funding for downtown housing in Logan, Glenwood and Clarinda

(Area) Grants administered by Southwest Iowa Planning Council will provide funding for housing in the downtowns of Logan, Glenwood, and Clarinda. The City of Clarinda will receive $200,000 to renovate and update two upper-story housing units. The project will include a complete interior overhaul of the second story space at 115 E Main Street, and will provide two of the only quality, updated rental units near the city center. Transforming this underutilized space into residential units will help to highlight the potential for improved quality of affordable living in downtown Clarinda.

Griswold earns championship at Corner Conference Softball Tourney

(Essex) With a 10-0 victory over Stanton on Friday evening the Griswold Tigers won the softball title at the Corner Conference Tournament. Karly Millikan went and Joey Reynolds each had three hits and two RBI. Brenna Rossell had a three hit game as well. Makenna Askeland had two hits and drove in one run. Millikan got the win in the circle with seven strikeouts. She allowed three hits.

Red Oak Man arrested for Assault

(Red Oak) Red Oak Police on Wednesday arrested 32-year-old Logan Matthew Hughes of Red Oak in the 1400 block of N. 5th Street for Domestic Abuse Assault, 1st Offense. Officers transported Hughes to the Montgomery County Jail and held him on no bond.

Boil advisory for portion of Clarinda

(Clarinda) – A portion of Clarinda has been placed under a boil advisory. City Manager Gary McClarnon says due to a water main break, residents that live on both sides of 13th Street from Division Street to Garfield Street are being asked to boil their water. McClarnon says the water main break has been repaired, but the advisory remains in effect.

Mills County board of adjustments backs communication tower permit

(Glenwood) -- Mills County zoning officials have backed plans for a new communication tower near the Loess Hills. During its monthly meeting Tuesday, by a 3-1 vote, the Mills County Zoning Board of Adjustments approved a conditional use permit for AT&T to install a communication tower along Pease Road in the county's Loess Hills Conservation Development Zoning District. Mills County Building and Zoning Technician Holly Jackson tells KMA News the tower is part of the nationwide FirstNet Responder Network, which was established to provide a strong communication network for emergency personnel.

Clarinda school officials discuss open enrollment changes

(Clarinda) -- Clarinda school officials call it "frank conversations" when discussing how the latest open enrollment changes could affect school districts. During its regular meeting Wednesday evening, the Clarinda School Board discussed the removal of the March 1 deadline for students to declare their intention to switch school districts, which Governor Kim Reynolds signed into law earlier this week. The measure was included in House File 2589, which passed on the final day of the legislative session. With the deadline gone, Board Member Paul Boysen says the district should look deeper into why students and families are coming and going from the district.

Committees selected for Red Oak engagement, housing assessment

(Red Oak) -- Efforts are underway in Red Oak to compile community input and housing needs. During its regular meeting Monday, the Red Oak City Council received an update from Red Oak Mayor Shawnna Silvius on the Community Heart and Soul and Housing Readiness Assessment programs. Silvius tells KMA News that committees have been selected for both programs. She says the housing assessment -- through the Iowa Economic Development Authority and Iowa State University -- will involve members from all parts of the community in identifying housing needs.

Two die in I-29 accident

Two Omaha-area teens were killed and two others injured in a two-vehicle accident on Interstate 29 Saturday night near Percival. According to the Iowa State Patrol, a northbound 2021 Dodge Charger driven by Rogelio Martinez, 26, of Columbus lost control and struck a northbound 2020 Jeep Wrangler driven by Garrett Grossmann, 20, of Omaha.
