Topeka police investigate body found in Chesney Park

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Police were investigating the discovery of a man’s body early Monday in Chesney Park in central Topeka but said foul play wasn’t suspected. Police and emergency responders were called around 5:12 a.m. Monday to the northeast side of the park in the 1800 block of S.W. Clay.

Driver arrested in wreck that injured two young children

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Authorities arrested the driver in a rollover wreck that seriously injured two young children. Jimmy Landis, 36, of Topeka was booked on connection with aggravated battery, aggravated child endangerment, battery of a law enforcement officer, interference with medical personnel, interference with law enforcement, child restraint violations, driving under the influence and driving while suspended.

Motorcycle rider killed Friday near Downtown Topeka identified

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - The Topeka Police Department has identified the person killed Friday afternoon in a motorcycle accident just south of Downtown Topeka. TPD Lt. Joe Perry says 44-year-old Nathan Galler of Topeka died after the motorcycle he was on collided with an occupied vehicle, then hit another before coming to rest. According to an obituary, Galler is survived by his parents, David and Donna Galler. Visitation will be held on June 25 from 1 to 2 pm at the Longview Funeral Home in Kansas City, Missouri.

Wabaunsee Co. man charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in death of two-month-old son

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A Wabaunsee County man has been arrested and charged with Involuntary Manslaughter in the September death of his two-month-old son. The Wabaunsee County Sheriff’s Office says Cole Barry, 25, was arrested on June 16 in connection with the death of his son, which occurred on September 23, 2020. Barry has also been charged with aggravated endangering of a child, reckless situation to a child under 18, domestic battery, and knowing rude physical contact with a family member or dating relationship.

Prosecutors have charged the owner of a gun found in a Topeka home by toddlers, who accidentally shot a 13-year-old girl with it. Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay filed charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child endangerment, and criminal possession of a gun by a felon against 22-year-old Dejuan Thomas Yelverton, the Topeka Capital-Journal reported.
