MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - C.J. McLelland turned himself in to Meridian police Thursday morning. MPD publicized June 28 that it had an active warrant for murder on McLelland but did not disclose which murder case it involved. News 11 asked Thursday which case is connected to McLelland’s charge and MPD said it was the June 16 death of Garrian Owens, 23, on Highway 39.

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - What was Potential Tropical Cyclone #2 was able to organize into a tropical cyclone on Friday morning...becoming Tropical Storm Bonnie. For a while, this system had a hard time organizing, and its proximity to land played a big part in that. However, hurricane hunters were finally able to find a closed circulation...hence Bonnie was born over the SW Caribbean Sea. Regardless, this system still brought tropical storm conditions to parts of the Lesser Antilles and the ABC islands. Now, as an official tropical storm, it’s expected to bring direct impacts to portions of Central America mainly Friday evening through Saturday morning.

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - A local all-star baseball team is getting ready to represent Meridian in regional play in hopes of advancing to the Babe Ruth World Series. The Meridian 9 and under Phil Hardin Cal Ripken All-Stars held a fundraiser Friday in downtown Meridian to help them head to the Southwest Regional in Hot Springs, Arkansas, July 7th-10th. Meridian earned the trip by capturing the state championship in Ocean Springs last weekend.

(WTOK) - Over the past couple of weeks, we have seen record temperatures with little to no rain, but the month of July looks to change that as we are starting with temperatures in the lower 90s and rain almost every day. Meridian has only received a little more than an inch of rain for June, and this is below the average by more than 3 inches. MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The Meridian School Board announced its plans for Carver Middle School in a special called meeting Thursday. “We took time during the final semester or the spring semester of this school year to look at enrollment numbers and to look at staffing needs for the upcoming year. Carver Middle School happened to be the middle school with the lowest enrollment and the highest number of teacher vacancies for the upcoming year. We could educate over 2,300 students across our three middle school campuses, but we were only educating a little less than 1,000. It just made good sense to go ahead and offer equal opportunities for all of our students across 2 middle schools instead of stretching our resources across three,” said Meridian Superintendent Dr. Amy Carter.

MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) - The U.S. Drought Monitor update came out on Thursday, and it showed that most of our area is suffering from Abnormally Dry conditions (yellow shade). This means that conditions are moving towards a drought IF we don’t get enough rain sooner than later. Unfortunately, parts of our area were also elevated to a Moderate Drought (tan shade) which is the early stages of actual drought conditions. Parts of Neshoba and Sumter counties are included within the Moderate Drought.
