Pickford boys, St. Ignace girls lead Newberry Elks meet

NEWBERRY — The Pickford boys and Newberry girls claimed titles at the Newberry Elks Invitational track and field meet Tuesday. Pickford won the boys meet with 146 points, followed by St. Ignace 89.5 and Newberry 69.5. They were followed by Cedarvllle 59, Engadine 46.75, Brimley 38, Rudyard 35.75, Manistique 28, Ojibwe Charter 7, Paradise 6 and Mackinac Island 1.

NHS girls softball battling injuries and gaining experience

Newberry Softball traveled to Brimley on Wednesday, May 11 to take on the Bays. Game one was 20-5 victory for the Bays Amelia Shanley and Alazayah Depew pitched for Newberry, walking 14 and striking out 4. Brittney Kimbler and Alazayah Depew had two hits each. Shanley and April James collected one hit apiece.

Third grade releases salmon in Tahquamenon River

Ann McFadden’s third grade class released 78 five-inch chinook salmon smolts and one chinook salmon runt into the brown waters of the Tahquamenon River on Friday, May 14. Their release marked the end of a long labor of love for McFadden and her students, who had been raising, feeding, and learning about the salmon since November 2021.
