Northwest Iowa Man Pleads Guilty to Federal Gun Charge

(Sioux City)--A Hartley man pled guilty Monday in federal court in Sioux City to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. 34-year-old Joe Ripka was previously convicted of failure to affix a drug tax stamp in Emmet County on October 23, 2017. This conviction prohibits a person from possessing a firearm.

Boring Crew Strike Natural Gas Line in Estherville

Estherville, IA (KICD) — Several blocks of Estherville were cordoned off after a company boring fiber optic cable struck a natural gas distribution line about 10 Monday morning. Emmet County Emergency Management Director Travis Sheridan tells KICD News there was no evacuation, but the Estherville fire department was on the scene for about three hours as a precaution. Black Hills Energy got the line repaired about noon after the arrival of equipment that was in Pocahontas. The leak was at the corner of 4th Avenue North and North 8th Street. Traffic was cut off from the 700 to 900 block on 4th Avenue and 300 to 500 block on North 8th.

Natural Gas Leak in Estherville

(Estherville)--Emergency crews are on the scene of a natural gas leak this morning in Estherville. Emmet County Emergency Manager Travis Sheridan says the leak occurred at 10:08 am at the corner of 4th Avenue North and North 8th St. when a construction crew accidently cut a natural gas line. Sheridan says the Estherville Fire Department and Black Hills Energy are on scene.

Emmet County Traffic Stop Leads to Arrest of Worthington Man

(Estherville)--A traffic stop last weekend in Emmet County resulted in drug charges for a Worthington, Minnesota man. According to Emmet County Sheriff Mike Martens, a sheriff’s deputy on patrol on July 23rd observed a speeding vehicle in the 3400 block of Highway 9 shortly before 3 am which resulted in the sheriff’s deputy initiating a traffic stop on the vehicle. During the course of the investigation a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia were discovered in the vehicle.

Spirit Lake Man Facing Charges After Traffic Stop Near Estherville

(Estherville)--A Spirit Lake man is facing multiple charges after a traffic stop last week on Highway 9 east of Estherville. Emmet County Sheriff Mike Martens says shortly after 5:20 pm on July 19th, a sheriff’s deputy on patrol in the 4300 block of Highway 9 observed a vehicle traveling 84 miles per hour and initiated a traffic stop. Upon investigation at the scene, the driver 62-year-old Kevin Helfenstine of Spirit Lake became non-compliant at the scene and was placed under arrest and transported to the Emmet County Jail.
