River rises rapidly after heavy rains, will drop slowly. Recent rains in the upper St. Croix River watershed have sent the highest water in more than two years down the river. On Saturday, May 14, the river reached 683 feet above sea level at Stillwater, triggering automatic no-wake status. As of publishing time on Monday, May 16, it was at 684.74 feet, and expected to rise another six inches or so.

Seventeen-year-old recovered by rescuers after about 40 minutes in the water. A 17-year-old died in Lake St. Croix Beach last Thursday, May 12, as he helped a friend who was struggling in the water. The sheriff’s office later identified him as Suleiman Ibrahim Abda Garado, a junior at Stillwater Area High School.

Wisconsin health officials are urging people in seven counties with high COVID-19 levels to wear masks indoors, and they’re encouraging precautions statewide. The counties that meet the CDC definition for a high COVID burden are Racine, Kenosha, Vernon, Monroe, La Crosse, Rusk and Barron. Most other Wisconsin counties, including Milwaukee, are in the medium category.

Dr. Quin Brooks has been named assisant chancellor to lead the new EDI unit at University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie, the university announced in press release last month. The unit was established August 1, 2021, to prioritize UW-Stout’s commitment to EDI across the university community. Dr. Brooks will begin her new role July 11.

River Falls scored early and often against Spring Valley Saturday at UW-River Falls’ Perkins Stadium, and when the dust settled the Wildcats walked away with a 24-8 victory. The Cats took control early by scoring 10 runs in the first two innings before putting 14 runs on the board in the third inning to open up a 24-0 lead. Spring Valley got a run in the fourth and seven in the fifth put couldn’t prevent the 10-run mercy rule from ending the game.

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) - Marshfield girls soccer drew with New Richmond while Wausau West softball lost to Hudson in Saturday’s high school highlights. Marshfield entered the second half with a 2-1 lead before an early New Richmond goal from Alexa Singer tied the match at 2-2. Minutes later, Lauren Katzenberger hit a perfectly placed ball in the back of the net to give Marshfield the lead back. But Chloe Groth’s goal later in the half tied the match at 3-3, which would be the final.

POLK COUNTY -- Polk County Public Health’s free COVID testing site will be moving to a new location. Starting Monday, May 16th, free COVID testing will be located in the eastern portion of the Polk County Government Center parking lot. Previously, COVID testing was offered at the Polk County Highway Department.
