Student achievements for June 30

Austin Travis Glessner, the 18-year-old son of Travis and Jeannea Glessner, was selected as the Berlin Lions Club’s Male Student of the Semester for the second semester of the 2021-22 school year. Prior to graduating from Berlin Brothersvalley High School, he was the president of the Class of 2022, president of the National Honor Society, and president of the band. He was a member of the jazz and concert band and served as an audio-visual technician for the school musicals and for the Northridge Baptist Church. Glessner plans to attend Frostburg University and pursue a degree in computer science.

INDIANAPOLIS (Triple-A, 36-36) was beaten by Nashville (Brewers), 8-5. DH Ben Gamel (hamstring), on a rehab assignment, went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. RF Cal Mitchell (.320) went 3 for 4 with two runs scored. SS Rodolfo Castro (.220) went 1 for 4 with a homer, his seventh. 3B Taylor Davis (.254) went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs. LHP Zach Matson (6.75) started and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit. RHP Hunter Stratton (1-4, 6.03) took the loss, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks in 1.1 innings.

Shaffer Bridge closing for repairs

A traffic detour is to start next week as work begins to rehabilitate the Shaffer covered bridge in Conemaugh Township. The Somerset County Commissioners announced Tuesday that the bridge would be closed to traffic from July 5 until work on the bridge is completed, which is scheduled to take 30 days to 60 days. Thornbury, Inc., of West Sunbury, is the contractor. A traffic detour is to be posted in the area while the work is in progress.

Man arrested after breaking into vehicles in Pennsylvania, Florida

BLAIR COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Police are searching for a Blair County man they say is wanted for home improvement fraud. Allegheny Township police are looking for Terry Wayne Geist Jr. It’s reported that he has an active warrant for felony home improvement fraud. Indiana Borough Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident that happened on Tuesday. Police say that the accident happened in the 300 block of Church Street at 3:24 PM. A legally parked and unoccupied vehicle was parked in a parking lot of 398 Church Street and was hit by a black-in-color pickup truck. The parked vehicle took on light damage. The offending vehicle will likely have damage to the rear bumper and/or tailgate.

Body Found at Jackson Township Motel

A Canton man is facing murder and felonious assault charges in connection with a shooting late Sunday night. Jackson Township Police say they were called to the Rodeway Inn on Sunset Strip Avenue for a report of a man down in the parking lot. The 35-year old victim had been shot. He was taken to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. They haven’t released his name yet until his family can be notified.

2 charged in rash of vehicle break-ins in Westmoreland County

Two people are facing charges in connection with more than two dozen vehicle break-ins across Westmoreland County, according to court papers. Troopers said the suspects — Shelby Lynn Stamm, 26, of Youngstown and John Mitchell Hughes, 30, of Orlando, Fla. — stole cash, guns, designer sunglasses, wallets and other items.

(WTAJ) — Studio 814’s Rebecca Petner sits down with Joe Fagnani, Chairperson for Service Paws of Central PA, and Sharon Moore, a diabetic who received her service dog, Waffles, thanks to the non-profit — SPCP. Moore says she doesn’t know how she lived without the help of a service dog for so long. Waffles also helps her with her PTSD, anxiety, and panic attacks. When Moore is having panic or anxiety issues, her service dog puts gentle pressure on her chest.
