A 29-year-old Thedford woman has been cited on six counts of animal cruelty after four rabbits and a python were found dead in and outside her camper in North Platte. The North Platte Police Department conducted a welfare check June 2 on the camper, which was parked in a residential area on the 1900 block of North Sheridan Street.

The Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway was recognized recently by the National Scenic Byway Foundation. The Byway was honored with the “Leveraging Resources Award” which recognized the “Polar Bear Tank Race” which is organized by Mitch and Patty Glidden of Mullen, owners of the Sandhills Motel. The event is used as a fund raising event for the Nebraska byway. The idea for the fundraising event was created in October of 2007. The primary purpose of the event was described this way “to put heads in beds during slack tourism season.” The second purpose was as a fundraiser for the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway. A soup cook-off and winners announced on the night before the race has been an integral part since it began. Besides Glidden’s motel, participants are booked at the Roadside Inn, 30 minutes away in Thedford, Nebraska thus helping both communities along the byway. The tanks used are like those used by the ranchers to hold water for their livestock. Teams decorate themselves and their tanks adding to the fun. Linda Teahon, president of the Sandhills Journey National Scenic Byway, told KCNI/KBBN radio that this is a very big award.

LINCOLN — Construction work will begin Monday on Nebraska Highway 2 between Halsey and Dunning, according to the Nebraska Department of Transportation. Repaving, bridge repair and associated projects will be involved, NDOT said in a press release. An 11-foot width restriction will be in effect, and bridge work will be done both day and night.

Minnie Mary Hamilton 94 passed away May 21, 2022 in North Platte, Ne. She was born on September 29, 1927 to Bert and Eva Hardy in a home south of Mullen. She attended her freshman year in Mullen and finished her high school years in Thedford. While her classmates in Home Economics were making aprons, she was designing and making clothes for herself, family, and friends.

It was a big day for Bass who won the boys cutting with a score of 74, placed first in the team roping with partner Zack Bradley of Brewster in a time of 9.22 seconds, and was the runner-up in the tie down roping on Sunday with a time of 11.57 seconds. Other area highlights from Sunday’s rodeo in Valentine included Anna Clark of Thedford winning the barrel racing in a time of 17.849 seconds and Cooper Kursave of Arcadia won the the bull riding with a score of 74.

Ralph Harold Eatinger, 82, of Brownlee, passed away on May 23, 2022, at Linden Court in North Platte after a brief illness. Ralph, known as RH to many, was born on July 17, 1939 to Ralph and Norma Eatinger in Broken Bow. RH was raised on the family ranch south of Brownlee. Upon graduation from Valentine High School in 1957, he went on to Hastings College. After a short stint at Hastings College, RH and his parents made a move to Colorado where they spent the decade of the 1960’s, ranching on the western slopes of the Rocky Mountains. RH had story after story about the experiences of ranching in the mountains.

Twila Ann Springer, 73, was born on September 9, 1948, to parents Paul and DeEtta (Pearson) Madron in Broken Bow. She grew up on the Madron Ranch south of Seneca, and attended Thomas County High School and graduated as Valedictorian in 1966. Twila attended Open Bible College in Des Moines, IA, where she earned degrees in Theology and Sacred Music. Twila played the piano and sang in her college choir group, as they toured the country. While in college, she met her future husband, Steven Springer. They were joined in marriage on August 22, 1969 at Bethel Assembly of God Church in Thedford.

Nebraska High School rodeo contestants made stops in Stapleton and Thedford over the weekend. Jace Hurlburt of Arcadia was girls all around champion at the Stapleton rodeo on Saturday. Hurlburt teamed with Tate Talkington of Scottsbluff to win the team roping Saturday in a time of 8.62 seconds and placed 2nd in the breakaway roping in a time of 3.42 seconds. Other area highlights on Saturday included Cooper Bass of Brewster winning the boys cutting with a score of 73. Cooper Kursave of Arcadia won the bull riding with a score of 78 and Emma Warren of Thedford won the goat tying in a time of 8.77 seconds.
