Salyersville Fire Department, North Magoffin Fire Department and the Magoffin County Rescue Squad responded to a structure fire on KY Rt. 40 east of Salyersville on Tuesday, June 15. Salyersville Police Department, Magoffin County Sheriff Department and Kentucky State Police were also on scene. Upon arrival, crews found smoke and fire coming from the east end of the residence and were able to extinguish the fire. The home of Wes and Sandra Rowe, along with two small children, suffered extensive smoke, fire and water damage, with the home and most everything in the home was destroyed. The cause of the fire is undetermined at press time.

A Magoffin County teenager was injured in an ATV accident over the weekend. The juvenile, approximately 14 years old, reportedly lost control of the ATV, hit a tree, then went over an embankment an estimated 40 to 50 feet. The teen was taken via ambulance to an area hospital for possible head injuries, with fog preventing a medical air flight. The juvenile’s condition is unknown at press time.

More Information Released in Last Month’s Fatal Breathitt County Plane Crash

We’re learning more about a small plane crash that happened in Breathitt County last month. Prior to his plane crashing, the 62-year-old pilot, Timothy Pankiewicz, had reported engine trouble. He had flown out of Green Cove Springs, Florida on May 24. He told air traffic controllers that his engine had lost oil pressure and failed. A controller told him of an airport where he could land three miles away, but the man said he couldn’t see it and would attempt to land in a field instead. The NTSB says official findings about the crash will be released at a later time.

Industrial Ave Fire in Woodstock Deemed Arson

WOODSTOCK - The fire on Industrial Ave in Woodstock has been deemed an arson. Smoke could be seen as far away as Innerkip after the fire was set around 7:50 pm on Sunday evening. The fire was set in the parking lot of Marwood International in Woodstock. Damage is estimated at $50,000.

Preliminary report released in fatal Breathitt County plane crash

FROZEN CREEK, Ky. (WYMT) - The National Transpiration Safety Board released a preliminary report into last month’s plane crash in Breathitt County that left the pilot dead. The report says the flight originated from Green Cove Springs, Florida on May 24 with a fuel stop at Pickens County Airport in Pickens, South Carolina.

Local man killed in Johnson Co. collision

US 460 – A Magoffin man died after a two-vehicle collision on Friday, May 28 in Johnson County. Johnson County Sheriff Doug Saylor told Mortimer Media Group at approximately 8:12 p.m. on May 28 Paintsville EMS, Oil Springs Volunteer Fire Department and Rockhouse Volunteer Fire Department and the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to an accident with injuries on US 460 between Paintsville and Salyersville, in Johnson County, with the wreck occurring between Lower Twin and Barnett’s Creek.

SALYERSVILLE – A woman from Ohio had to be rescued after falling and breaking her leg while walking up a hollow on Cow Creek. Arbadella Reed explained to the Independent the woman and her family often come and stay in a camper on the property, with her family coming from that area.

Florida man dies in eastern Ky. plane crash

Kentucky State Police has released the identity of the pilot killed in an eastern Kentucky plane crash. Police said 62-year-old Timothy M. Pankiewicz, of Green Cove, Florida, died when his single-engine plane went down in Breathitt County, about 10 miles north of Jackson. Pankiewicz was the lone occupant of the plane.
