On Thursday, the Greater Poplar Bluff Area Chamber of Commerce announced plans for a new 3-mile foot and bike path called the Wolf Creek Connector Trail. It will link Wolf Creek’s South Trailhead to paths on PP Highway. Once completed, residents can walk from Westwood Boulevard to the 20-plus miles of Wolf Creek Trails, and eventually into Mark Twain National Forest.

Poplar Bluff city and Butler County firefighters responded at 11 a.m. Thursday to a tractor trailer fire at the intersection of Business Highway 67 north, Barron Road and Highway W. The vehicle’s brakes caught fire, said Poplar Bluff Battalion Chief Roy Lane. The fire then entered the trailer, which was loaded with pickles. The driver was able to drive the truck away from the trailer, and limit the spread of the fire. The vehicle was cleared from the scene and the road reopened shortly after the fire was extinguished. Butler County Health Department, Poplar Bluff Police Department and the state fire marshal were also at the scene.

(Wappapello) A big event takes place Saturday at Wappapello Lake in Wayne County. Becky Hayes, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the lake, says the annual Waterfest celebration will be happening. Saturday’s Waterfest runs from 11 until 3 at Redman Creek Beach in Wappapello.

Jo Evelyn “Mama Jo” Taplin, 79, returned to her maker Wednesday, June 15, surrounded by her sons Tommy and Rodney and family at her home in Patterson, Missouri. Mama Jo leaves a legacy of two children, 14 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Connie Mack Waller, and her second husband, Glen William Taplin Jr.; her sister, Lois Lane; and her parents Etha and Birdie Sisk. She is also survived by her sisters Betty Carter and Martha Randolph and eight nieces and nephews.

Fremont, MO. – A one-vehicle accident has led to the fatality of the driver on June 16th, at roughly 2:00PM. A 2016 Harley Davidson Road King was being ridden on US 60, going Eastbound, when they crashed just one and a half miles East of Fremont. The rider was Michael Beckham, 71 of Winchester Kansas.
