Strand wins 3 more golf tourneys

Kelli Ann Strand has watched plenty of miles pass in the rearview mirror since graduating as the Challis High School class of 2022 valedictorian last month. Strand, who’s headed to the University of Nebraska this fall on golf and academic scholarships, competed in three Idaho golf tournaments in June, winning all three and setting a new course record at the 105-year-old The River Club in Boise.

Softball camp scheduled in Challis

Girls between the ages of 9 and 15 can learn softball fundamentals and play fun games during a four-day softball camp in Challis. The camp is scheduled for Monday, June 27 through Thursday, June 30 from 10 a.m. until noon each day at the baseball field in Challis city park. Girls will learn about running bases, catching, batting and both infield and outfield play during the sessions. MVP Wildcats softball players and coaches lead the camp.

Challis student makes honor rollKacie Hewitt of Challis earned a spot on the President’s List at Lewis Clark State College for the spring 2022 semester. Students must have earned a grade point average of at least 3.75 on at least 12 graded credits to be on the president’s list. Hewitt is among 471 students on the president’s list.

Challis Library secures 2 grants

Challis children and adults will soon have two more reasons to visit the Challis Public Library. The library has been awarded two grants — one to pay for the installation of a private pod designed for people to have telehealth conversations and the other to offer an afterschool skills lab program for students in kindergarten through 12th grades.

Class of 2022 heads out the door

The words “thanks” and “thank you” were abundant during the Challis High School class of 2022 commencement ceremony. Nearly every speaker thanked someone — or many someones — during the May 26 ceremony. Graduates thanked their family members, teachers, coaches and fellow students. The adult speakers tossed the thanks back to the class members, with English teacher and commencement speaker Miriam Cross thanking the 14 teens for their efforts and attitudes in her classroom.

6th graders will head to Yellowstone again this fall

Challis sixth-graders will travel to Yellowstone National Park for four days in October since the school was selected in a lottery for the Expedition Yellowstone camp. Challis has had good luck with its applications for the program, sending students nearly every year. Only about half the schools that apply in any given year are selected to attend. The program was halted during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Larry Leon McDowell 08/05/1933 - 05/26/2022 Larry McDowell, formerly of Challis, passed away in Twin Falls, ID on May 26th with his family by his side. Larry, son of Edward Justine McDowell and Josie Marie Springfield McDowell was born in Norfolk, VA on August 5th, 1933 where his dad worked in the naval ship yard. His mother passed away when he was 13 and he was raised by his late sister Iris Mott.

3 weather records set so far in June

Three weather records have been set at the Challis Airport so far this month, according to the National Weather Service. The .71 of an inch of rain that fell on the city on Sunday, June 12 was a new record for that day. Two days earlier the temperature hit 84 degrees, a new record for June 10 in Challis. And, the overnight low of 37 degrees set on Tuesday, June 7 was another record.

Endurance runs slated for Saturday in Challis

The 2022 edition of the River of No Return Endurance Runs are scheduled for Saturday, June 18 in Challis. Three races are planned again this year: a 32K, a 55K and a 108K. Runners tackling the longest route begin at 5 a.m., starting their race from city park. The 55K race at 6:30 a.m. also starts in city park. The 32K race begins at 8:30 a.m. from Bayhorse. Shuttles take the 32K runners from city park to the ghost town for the race start.

Community meeting about cobalt mine set for June 15

A community meeting about Jervois Mining's cobalt mine plans is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday, June 15 at the Challis Community Event Center. Jervois personnel are working with groups in Custer and Lemhi counties on a community benefits agreement, which is "designed to deliver lasting benefits to communities that host large-scale industrial projects."
