During the hot and humid days of summer, I have found that drinking water alone has not been able to quench my thirst. Sports drinks are designed to replenish sodium and potassium for athletes who do a moderate to high intensity workout of 60 minutes or longer each day. Unfortunately, sports energy drinks are also high in sugar and food dyes and drinking more than 1 serving a day can increase the risk of diabetes and other health conditions. According to the Gatorade website, a 20-ounce serving of Gatorade contains 140 calories and 36 grams of carbohydrates, with 34 grams of carbohydrates coming straight from sugar. One serving size is 8 oz. of Gatorade (the smallest bottle sold).

Allegany State Park, NY’s largest State Park, consists of 65,000 acres making it the perfect place to spread out but still have a great time. It offers everything from rustic camping to cabins where you only have to bring the food! Enjoy hiking, biking, swimming, kayaking, fishing, or even horseback riding. The Art Roscoe Trail System has some of the finest double track trails in WNY for mountain bikers. Consisting of interconnecting loops, the trail totals approximately 24 miles. Quaker Lake and Red House Lake both have beaches and swimming available, as well as rentals of kayaks, canoes, stand up paddle boards, and paddle boats.

Ellicottville Grads Receive CRCF Scholarship Awards

OLEAN - Three Ellicottville Central School graduates recently received scholarship awards from funds managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation. Elsa Woodarek received the Kristen Hintz Memorial Scholarship for $2,000. This scholarship, which came under Foundation’s management in 2017, is named in memory of Kristen Nicole Hintz, who was a senior at Ellicottville Central School and at the top of her class when a tragic auto accident cut her life short in 2000. A leader in her class, she was a multi-sport athlete who always gave her best and persevered through difficult situations. Her kindness touched all she met.
