Elkoans protest against new mask mandate

ELKO – Dozens of community members peacefully protested against the new mask mandate while another protest was taking place in Carson City on Thursday night. About 60 protestors, including some small children, held up signs, waved American flags and shouted “no more masks” to motorists on Idaho Street in front of the Elko County Courthouse.

Mine Safety Olympiad returns to Elko this weekend

ELKO – Emergency skills will be put to the test by mine rescue teams as the Mine Safety Olympiad returns to Elko this week. Nine teams from Nevada and Wyoming are participating in the competition that includes Kinross Round Mountain, Marigold, KGBM Robinson, Thunder Basin Coal from Wyoming, and Nevada Gold mine sites from Carlin, Cortez, Long Canyon, Phoenix and Turquoise Ridge.

Fire burns 5 acres in Spring Creek, other blazes in eastern part of county

ELKO – A fire that started shortly after 3 p.m. Tuesday in Spring Creek threatened homes but was quickly brought under control. The initial report stated that there was a 20-foot by 20-foot fire near a transformer box on Willington Drive and that structures were threatened, according to the Elko County Fire Protection District.

Street sealing planned next week in Elko

ELKO -- Weather permitting, a contractor for the City of Elko will be performing the annual street maintenance program beginning on Monday, August 2. The work consists of applying micro/slurry to select city streets. ELKO – A group of local Realtors and one special little girl recently made a significant donation to the Elko Animal Shelter. “Our campaign was called, ‘You’ve been Luked,’” said real estate agent Sandra Velasquez of NextHome Infinity Realty. “We went around placing ‘Luke’ cutouts in people’s yards and in return they would donate to Elko Animal Shelter.”
