The Washington County Sheriff's Office identifies a man found dead near Copan. Undersheriff Jon Copeland says deputies were on routine patrol in the area of West 300 Road and North 4020 Road on Wednesday when they found an abandoned vehicle and later the body of 49-year-old Carl Spencer from Tulsa.

Topeka Woman Arrested on Warrant, Drug Charges

The Caney Police Department (CPD) arrests a Topeka woman on a warrant and drug charges. According to the CPD, the suspect, 28-year-old Aalijah Lawton, was seen pulling into Casey's General Store on Wednesday after police were notified that she had allegedly been driving recklessly and running vehicles off of Highway 75. When running a warrants check, officers observed that Lawton had an active warrant for aggravated vehicular battery and leaving the scene of an accident in Shawnee County, Kansas.

KDHE ends boil water advisory for City of Thayer

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - A boil water advisory for the public water system in Thayer, Kansas has ended. The advisory for the small southeast Kansas town was originally issued June 20 by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment due to a loss of pressure caused by a waterline break. Lower water pressure could potentially lead to bacterial contamination.

Road Rage Incident in Copan Leaves One Injured

A road rage incident in the Town of Copan leaves one injured over the weekend. According to Washington County Undersheriff Jon Copeland, a car knocked down a motorcycle on Caney Street around 3:45 on Sunday afternoon. Copeland says an unknown suspect allegedly got out of a black Pontiac G8 and proceeded to assault the victim on the motorcycle before leaving the scene. Copeland said the victim received minor injuries.

News to Know: Kansas courts rule on gerrymandering, and Pride month boosts sales for Independence business

TOPEKA, Kan. – The highest court in Kansas has declared that the state constitution does not prohibit partisan gerrymandering. On Tuesday the justices split four-three in explaining their reasons for previously upholding a Republican congressional redistricting law. The State Supreme court issued only a brief opinion last month in approving the new congressional map. The court’s majority said the Kansas constitution permits legislators to consider partisan factors in redistricting.

Glenn Lee Flanders (Flapp), age 68, of Dearing, Kansas passed away on Sunday, June 19, 2022, at Coffeyville Regional Medical Center in Coffeyville, Kansas. Glenn was born on June 2, 1954, in Coffeyville, Kansas to Marvin and Myrtle (Miesner) Flanders. He grew up in Coffeyville where he attended Edgewood Elementary school and graduated from Field Kindley Memorial High School.

Robert H. Miner age, 84 of Independence, Kansas passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Labette Medical Center in Independence. Robert was born on April 29, 1938, to Alonzo Miner and Florence Grant in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Robert was one of four children. He grew up in the Dearing area attending Dearing grade school and coming into Coffeyville for his high school education, graduating from Field Kindley Memorial High School. As an adult Robert continued his education by taking college classes.

Alleged Burglary Suspect Apprehended By Independence Police Department

An alleged burglar arrested last Thursday at about 9 pm in Independence. Independence Police Department investigated a call of trespassing in the 600 block of N. 16th Street. IPD detained and questioned 45-year-old Isaac Clark. Clark was placed under arrest and charged with Burglary, Possession of a Narcotic, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
