Here's why the Lena-Winslow school referendum failed despite more 'yes' votes than 'no'

Although a referendum put before voters by the Lena-Winslow School District received more than 54% of the vote in Tuesday's primary election, it did not pass. The school district asked voters whether school board members should be elected at large without restrictions on residency within the district rather than electing them according to their congressional townships.

Local church invites community for fireworks and prayers

WINNEBAGO, Ill. (WIFR) - Dozens of people gathered Sunday night to kick off Independence Day with prayer, fireworks and fun. The Crossroads Community Church combined its Sunday service with an Independence Day celebration. After attending Mass, Church members enjoyed food and yard games. At the end of the night, everyone watched the Winnebago firework show.

Bridge on Badger State Trail severely damaged in Green County crash, authorities say

A bucket truck caused severe damage to a bridge on the Badger State Trail in Green County on Friday, authorities said. The truck, driven by Todd J. Richard, 31, of Lancaster, had its bucket too high and crashed into the bridge on the 5200 block of Round Grove Road in the town of Monroe at 2:30 p.m., Green County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Zack Degner said in a statement.

In mid-June, first responders were called to a home after an explosion and fire occurred. Two individuals were severely burned when a fuel barrel was placed onto a bonfire and exploded, according to WREX. Both victims were airlifted to a Wisconsin hospital for treatment, one of the died from her injuries.

Monroe woman accused of stealing items from graves

A 46-year-old Monroe woman is under arrest, accused of stealing memorial items from graves at local cemeteries. According to a news release, officers investigating thefts from Calvary Cemetery and Greenwood Cemetery executed a search warrant on a residence on the 2600 block of 8th Avenue just before 1:30 last Thursday afternoon.
