A residential garbage truck engulfed in flames on Fort Wainwright

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - This morning around 11:20 a.m. a garbage truck picking up garbage, operated by Mainscape, caught fire on Fort Wainwright. According to Fort Wainwright Fire Chief Chuck Gibbs, “the driver reported hearing and feeling a small explosion in the back of his truck after compacting a load of trash and immediately pulled over into a parking lot in the vicinity of 601st Street and Pine Street.”

Record-high temperatures set to scorch Alaska to start July

The abnormal heat will continue to dry out the already baked ground, fueling more wildfires in what's already been a record fire season in the Last Frontier. Alaska, traditionally one of the coldest states in the country, is set to see an unusually warm start to July thanks to a heat dome parking itself over the region. Temperatures could rise up to 20 degrees F above normal in the northernmost state, with temperatures rising well into the 80s to near 90 F.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks North Star Borough has sent out an emergency alert for areas north of the Chatanika River and west of the Murphy Dome Boat Launch. A Level 3 GO evacuation is in effect and persons living in this area are to evacuate now and leave immediately.

Fairbanks hardware store employee draws on bicycling bandsaw bandit, no shots fired, man runs off

Employees at a Fairbanks power tool store on attempted on Friday to stop a man who had stolen a bandsaw kit from their store. By the time employees caught up with the man, he was already on his bicycle fleeing the scene. Employees chased him down and while attempting to recover the merchandise from the man, the suspect grabbed a holstered firearm from his backpack and tried removing the gun from the holster, according to the report by the Alaska Department of Public Safety.

18-year old Jamison Gallion enters guilty pleas for Two Rivers area fires

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The man accused of setting several homes and businesses in the Two Rivers area has entered another change of plea. On Monday June 27, 2022, in a Fairbanks Courtroom, 18-year old Jamison Gallion entered guilty pleas for charges related to arson, burglary, criminal mischief, and terrorist threats.

Construction Report: Steese Expressway to see limited reopening

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Throughout the month of June, the Steese Expressway has been closed to traffic from College Road to Airport Way. However, this path will soon see a limited reopening. According to Danielle Tessen, Public Information Officer with the Alaska Department of Transportation, “At the beginning of July, we’re actually going to be able to open up the Steese to two lanes of traffic, one in each direction.”

Fairbanks-area WIC benefits to be dispersed through Juneau office

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is a federal program to provide nutrition services for children 5 and under and their parents. According to Leigh Bolin, Executive Director of local nonprofit Resource Center for Parents and Children (RCPC), “It provides supplemental nutrition services for children under the age of 5, people who are pregnant, port-partum, breastfeeding and infants.”

Fairbanks Rugby Club hosts the Solstice Scrum

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - The Fairbanks Rugby Club hosted the 2022 Solstice Scrum rugby tournament at the Ken Kunkle Center off of Goldstream Road. The tournament is an annual event for the Alaska Rugby Union which the Fairbanks Rugby Club is a part of. The tournament for 2022 was a two day event with dining and social time before and after the game play.

Nanooks Swim Team Named Spring 2022 CSCAA Scholar All-America Team

FAIRBANKS - The Alaska Nanooks swim team was named a 2022 CSCAA Scholar All-America Team following their academic success in 2021-22. The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) selected 731 teams from 441 institutions to the Scholar All-America Team for the Spring 2022 semester. Teams were selected on the basis of their Spring 2022 grade point averages and represent 17,845 student-athletes.

Man dies in helicopter crash while fighting Clear Fire

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) - A man is dead after his helicopter crashed while assisting in firefighting efforts on the Clear Fire, according to Alaska State Troopers. According to an online dispatch, troopers received a report of the crash near mile marker 280 of the Parks Highway around 7:42 p.m. Sunday evening.
