FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - This morning around 11:20 a.m. a garbage truck picking up garbage, operated by Mainscape, caught fire on Fort Wainwright. According to Fort Wainwright Fire Chief Chuck Gibbs, “the driver reported hearing and feeling a small explosion in the back of his truck after compacting a load of trash and immediately pulled over into a parking lot in the vicinity of 601st Street and Pine Street.”

Record-high temperatures set to scorch Alaska to start July

The abnormal heat will continue to dry out the already baked ground, fueling more wildfires in what's already been a record fire season in the Last Frontier. Alaska, traditionally one of the coldest states in the country, is set to see an unusually warm start to July thanks to a heat dome parking itself over the region. Temperatures could rise up to 20 degrees F above normal in the northernmost state, with temperatures rising well into the 80s to near 90 F.

Employees at a Fairbanks power tool store on attempted on Friday to stop a man who had stolen a bandsaw kit from their store. By the time employees caught up with the man, he was already on his bicycle fleeing the scene. Employees chased him down and while attempting to recover the merchandise from the man, the suspect grabbed a holstered firearm from his backpack and tried removing the gun from the holster, according to the report by the Alaska Department of Public Safety.

Construction Report: Steese Expressway to see limited reopening

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) - Throughout the month of June, the Steese Expressway has been closed to traffic from College Road to Airport Way. However, this path will soon see a limited reopening.
