Sioux Valley Energy continues work in Lake and area counties; East River Electric restores power to substations

Ted Smith, Sioux Valley Vice President of Engineering and Operations, said they have never fought storm conditions like this before. He said they are basically dealing with a damage path 50-miles wide and 100-miles long. Sioux Valley reports that the swath of damage caused by the derecho is more widespread than ice storms or tornadoes.

Trenton Bass graduates college

HILLS, Minn. (KELO) – For the last four and a half years, we’ve been following the journey of Trenton Bass. The Hills, Minnesota athlete was hurt during a football game and suffered a spinal injury. That was back in 2017. Now KELOLAND News is checking back in with Trenton as he reaches another milestone in his life.

Madison City Commission meeting Monday

The Madison City Commission holds its regular meeting Monday. The commission is scheduled to adopt a resolution temporarily waiving building permit fees related to storm damages, and will give an update on storm recovery. Commissioners are also scheduled to adopt a resolution amending employee compensation for 2022 for an office manager position, and consider a sidewalk improvement project appeal. Also on the agenda for city commissioners are agreements with Flock Services Group for the police department camera system, and an update on the Madison Aquatic Center.

Michigan Softball’s NCAA Tournament path is revealed

The Michigan softball team didn’t win the Big Ten championship this past weekend but the Wolverines still punched their NCAA Tournament ticket. After a strong close to the season, which included a trip to the Big Ten championship game, the Michigan softball team is officially headed back to the NCAA Tournament after receiving an at-large berth on Sunday.

MHS Tennis team found shelter on the road during Thursday’s storm

While some were able to stay safe from Thursday’s storm in their homes or businesses, others were left seeking shelter while on the road. The Madison High School Boys Tennis team was on their way back from a meet in Watertown Thursday, when the powerful winds forced them to the nearest farm house they could find.

Flandreau, Canova and the Mudcats win Cornbelt openers Sunday

Sunday marked the opening night of Cornbelt League baseball for the summer. The Flandreau Cardinals opened their season with a 13-3 win over the Salem Cubs. The Cardinals trailed 2-1 before scoring four runs to take the lead in the 3rd. Flandreau scored 8 more runs in the 8th inning to end the game on the mercy rule. Jacob Patterson had 3 hits and 3 runs for the Cardinals. Jordan Gesling had 3 RBI, while Nate Kneebone drove in 2 runs. Aiden Ladd, Luke Gassman, and Bret Severtson combined to strike out 9 Salem batters. Luke Loudenburg led the Cubs with 2 hits and an RBI.

Death notice for Curtis “Curt” Johnson

Curtis “Curt” Johnson, 81, Jasper, died Thursday, May 12, 2022 at the Pipestone County Hospice House in Pipestone. A memorial service will be held Friday, May 20 at 1:30 p.m. with gathering of family and friends beginning at 12 noon, all at the Jasper Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jasper.

Michigan softball heads to Orlando for NCAA regional, opens vs. South Dakota State

Michigan’s softball team is headed to the NCAA Tournament for a 27th consecutive time. The 23rd-ranked Wolverines (36-16), who had their seven-game win streak snapped Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Nebraska in the Big Ten championship, are in the Orlando regional and will open play at 3:30 p.m. Friday against South Dakota State (40-11). The University of Central Florida is the host school and the No. 16 overall seed. It faces Villanova in its regional opener.

Madison High School holds graduation ceremony

Eighty-one more students became alumni of Madison High School on Sunday. Madison High School held its graduation ceremony for the Class of 2022 in the Madison High School gymnasium on Sunday afternoon. Several students were recognized during the ceremony for their academic achievements, including those who finished in the top ten-percent of their graduating class. Those eight students were Katharine Comes, Olivia Flemming, Alexandra Gutierrez, Abigail Morse, Elijah Olson, Nathan Ricke, Mallorie Schultz, and Alison Vacanti.

College Softball (5/15): Omaha forces Summit League championship game, falls to SDSU

(KMAland) -- Omaha forced a winner-take-all Summit League championship game, but they fell short to South Dakota State in regional college softball on Sunday. Omaha (32-14): Omaha forced a winner-take-all Summit League championship game with a 3-0 win over South Dakota State (39-11), but the Jackrabbits won 5-0 in the final. Kamryn Meyer (22-6) struck out 10 in a complete-game shutout in the opener. Lynsey Tucker and Jamie White had one hit and one RBI each. In game two, Omaha had just one hit — from Rachel Weber — while Meyer (22-7) gave up four hits and an unearned run in three innings.
