Alaska rejected more than 7,500 ballots in special primary election. Here’s why.

More than 7,500 ballots were rejected in the special primary election to fill the remainder of the late Congressman Don Young’s term, according to the final vote tally. That’s a statewide rejection rate of 4.55%, double the rejection rate from the 2020 primary. The final ballot rejection rate in rural Alaska communities was even higher, with about 1 in 8 ballots not being counted. The primary was Alaska’s first statewide by-mail election.

On the June 28 Bethel City Council agenda: a ballot proposition and a budget amendment

On the agenda is a ballot proposition that will appear on municipal ballots this October. The ballot measure will determine whether the City of Bethel has the authority to issue mask mandates. Voting "yes" on the ballot means you think that the city should not be able to issue the mandates. Voting "no" means you think that it should have the authority. More than 117 residents signed a petition requesting that the proposition appear on the ballot.

Show respect for people past and present

My next article is a continuation of what I brought up not too long ago. A lifelong friend of mine and I openly discussed the homeless situation in Bethel because he has had a brush with the homeless on his property. The community of Bethel became a caterer to people who had no place to stay and were not Bethel residents, but people from various villages in the Y-K Delta.

The new system, which is available today (June 10th, 2022), is intended for certain non-emergency incidents and situations where the suspect is not known and the crime was not witnessed. While the new online reporting system may be expanded, reports for fraud, harassing phone calls, shoplifting, theft, trespassing, and vandalism/criminal mischief are currently being accepted.

How Bethel helped the people who came to town to escape the lower Yukon River fires

At least 145 people chose to fly to Bethel after a historic tundra fire moved closer to their homes in the lower Yukon River communities of St. Mary’s, Pitkas Point, and Mountain Village. Most who relocated stayed at two emergency shelters in Bethel set up at the National Guard Armory and Gladys Jung Elementary School. On June 19, the shelters closed and the all people staying in them flew home. Many local individuals and organizations worked together to help the people who relocated. Here is a list of some of them.
