Police: Shepherd culprit was on 2-day, 2-county crime spree

A 47-year-old Sumner man wanted for home invasion and stealing a vehicle in Isabella County has been arrested in Gratiot County on several additional felony charges. Joseph Ryan Kadlek, who police said went on a two-day crime spree last week, has been charged by Gratiot County Prosecutor Keith Kushion with one additional count of unlawfully driving away a vehicle, as well as armed robbery, felony firearms, felon in possession of a weapon, felon in possession of ammunition, and resisting an obstructing a police officer.

Midland Township firefighters are investigating what they are calling a suspicious barn fire that took place Sunday night, causing an estimated $50,000 in damage. The barn, located in the 500 block of E. Freeland Road, was adjacent to a house. The homeowners were away when the fire erupted. A passerby called 911 at about 11:43 p.m., and Midland Township firefighters arrived several minutes later.

After the City of Midland's Parks and Recreation conducted a routine water sampling test conducted Tuesday, the pool closed out of caution after the bacteria levels were detected, according to a city press release. One of the three suspects in the fatal shooting of a Saginaw man on Father’s Day was himself gunned down in the parking lot of a Bay City business Sunday afternoon. Police confirmed Cortez Owens was the man shot multiple times about 4:20 p.m. on Sunday in the parking lot between D’Angelo’s pizzeria and Tuthill Brothers Food Market in the 1300 block of Columbus Avenue. Owens had been getting pizza with a woman and her 12-year-old child when someone approached them and opened fire. The woman and her child were not harmed. Owens, who was 34, was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at a local hospital.
