Joseph ‘Joe’ Patrick. Kennedy, 62, of Muscoda, died Saturday, June 18, 2022, at Gundersen Boscobel Hospital. He was born on February 9, 1960, the son of Donald and Irene (Minnie) Kennedy. Joe graduated from Grayslake High School and began working at a printing lab in Grayslake. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. Joe loved spending time with his family and his yellow lab Bruttus Kennedy.

FENNIMORE, Wis. — Gov. Tony Evers today announced $2.9 million in grant funding for workforce development efforts at Southwest Wisconsin Technical College in Fennimore. Evers visited the Southwest Tech campus to announce the funding, which is part of a second round of Workforce Innovation Grants being awarded across the state.

NEW HAMPTON - The Crestwood softball team racked up a combined total of 18 runs in two games to earn a sweep over New Hampton on June 14. The Cadets won game one, 6-3; and triumphed in game two, 12-7. Playing at Waukon on June 17, the Cadets tallied three runs in the fifth inning on their way to a 3-0 win to improve to 10-4 overall.

Playing a doubleheader at Decorah on June 17, the Cadets dropped both games. The Vikes edged Crestwood, 3-1, in game one; and they beat the Cadets, 13-2, in game two.

Norman Eugene Mueller, 92, of Luana, Iowa passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2022 at his home. Norman was born to Henry F.W. and Margaret Lena (Ziegler) Mueller on August 27, 1929. He attended Luana schools until eighth grade. Norman worked for Brandt Farms and George Walter, before joining the United States Army, where he served honorably in infantry and anti-aircraft during the Korean conflict. After leaving the Army he went to work for the railroad, then for Peglow Ford & Mercury before going to work for the town of Luana where he retired in the late 90’s. Not ready for retirement, he worked part time at Luana Tap.

Kathleen E. “Kay” Rider, 95, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Friday, June 17, 2022, at Prairie Maison in Prairie du Chien. She was born in Boscobel, on Sept. 24, 1926, the daughter of Luverne and Florence (Mercer) Dobson. She went to nursing school and worked at Deaconess Hospital in Milwaukee before moving to Prairie du Chien in 1947. Kay married Karl Rider on Nov. 22, 1947, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Prairie du Chien. She began working in Prairie du Chien at the General Hospital and eventually the Memorial Hospital, where she became the director of nursing. She received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Dubuque and originated the CNA program that is now taught through Southwest Technical College in Fennimore. She also worked at the Convalescent Center in Prairie du Chien before returning to Memorial Hospital in home health until retirement. Kay’s husband Karl preceded her in death on June 10, 2000. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and was also involved in the American Cancer Society and the Girl Scouts. She was an avid knitter and knitted many caps for newborn babies in the Prairie du Chien area. Kay was a selfless person whose life revolved around caring for others.

The Harpers Ferry Fireflies have won the Granny Basketball State Championship for the fourth time in the last seven years, adding this year’s title to those won by the team in 2016, 2017 and 2019. The Fireflies shined their way through four games at this year’s State Tournament held June 11-12 at the Valley High School Fieldhouse in Des Moines, first defeating a team from Indianola, 60-46, before doing likewise with a Prairie Storm team from Kansas, 53-32. After defeating the Ankeny Honeybees, 60-46, the Fireflies clinched their State Tournament Championship with a 47-46 triumph over the Model T’s of Center Point in the championship game.

Evelyn (Ione) Larson was born on January 5, 1939 in Elkader, Iowa. She was the oldest of five children born to Harrill and Dorothy Larson. She died on June 10, 2021 after battling a long illness. She had lived in Hawkeye, Iowa since 1965 and was a resident of Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, Iowa from June 2017 until her death.
