Barbara Joy (Richter) Smiley, 73, of Walterboro, SC passed away peacefully at her home on June 19th, 2022 surrounded by family and under the care of Amedysis Hospice. Born November 10, 1948, Barbara grew up in northeast Ohio and was a graduate of the class of 1966 at Chardon High School. She later settled in Walterboro, SC with her husband (Malcolm) where she made many, many friends.

Born December 24, 1944, she was a daughter of the late Hallie Mosley and Annie Smith Mosley. She worked for over 40 years for Westinghouse/International Paper. She loved her animals, relaxing by the pool and working with her flowers. Most of all, she loved her family and spending time with them.

Man allegedly hired in Alex Murdaugh's suicide plot is arrested again

A South Carolina man accused of assisting lawyer Alex Murdaugh with a failed suicide ploy to collect a $10 million life insurance policy was arrested again, authorities said. Curtis Edwards Smith, 61, was taken into custody Friday, according to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. The charges include four counts of money laundering, three counts of forgery, and criminal conspiracy, NBC affiliate WCBD-TV of Charleston reported. It's unclear if the new charges are connected to the Murdaugh case.

Mr. Richard Glenn Hiott, affectionaly known to everyone as “Ricky”, 70, of Walterboro, entered into eternal rest Tuesday evening, June 21, 2022 at his residence. Born June 25, 1951 in Walterboro, he was a son of the late Richard Ransom Hiott and Frances Brownlee Hiott Bailey. He served his country in the South Carolina Army National Guard. Ricky retired from Dayco in Walterboro as head maintenance technician. He enjoyed fishing and playing the guitar. He was a spiritual man who always talked to God. He loved to make people happy and always listened to anyone who needed to talk. Ricky was always willing to help anyone, whether they needed physical or emotional support, and to his family he was a full time “Superman”.

New owners, big plans: Restoration in store for Cat Island golf course closed since 2019

Plans to restore and revitalize the Cat Island golf course are under way with the recent purchase of the property by Virginia-based Resort Development Partners (RDP). The Cat Island Golf Club opened in the summer of 1985, but has struggled in recent years. Ownership of the property has changed hands several times, and the course, which has fallen into a state of disrepair, has been closed since 2019. It will be the focus of RDP’s revitalization efforts.
