If you didn’t read the June 10 edition of The Daily News, you missed a front-page story about new plans for an old downtown Saxton landmark. In today’s column I would like to share some memories of a place that was a second home for this writer for many years.

Snappy’s convenience stores increases minimum starting pay by $2

PHILIPSBURG — Snappy’s Convenience Stores is increasing its minimum hourly wage by $2 an hour across its 10 retail locations in Central Pennsylvania. “Our staff have really been wonderful. Over the last year, with COVID-19 and all of the uncertainty with the pandemic, we’ve really seen a growth in character and hard work throughout the company,” said Snappy’s co-owner Keith Powell. “We’re only successful when our staff works hard and makes us shine. This wage increase represents how we feel about our current staff and the value we see in new hires.”

LOCAL FIRE COMPANIES RECEIVE FUNDS FROM ASSISTANCE TO FIREFIGHTERS PROGRAM

Three area fire companies have received grant funding that will be put towards the purchasing of rescue equipment. The Commodore Fire Department said in a Facebook post that they say “has been several months or years in the making,” that along Homer City and Clymer fire crews, they were able to purchase self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA) as well as other equipment through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.
