Emporia State University mourns passing of football player

Emporia State University and the Emporia State football team are mourning the loss of one of their own. According to a news release from ESU Athletics, redshirt sophomore Brexten Green passed away Saturday at Grand Lake in Oklahoma following a cliff diving accident. Green, a native of Cashion, Oklahoma, was a receiver for the football team, a 2020 Oklahoma state champion as a member of the Cashion High School Wildcats football team and was named the district A-3 player of the year his senior year of high school.

They're #1: Northern Heights students hit national heights

Two Northern Heights High School students now have something in common with the Kansas men's basketball team. They are national champions. Taylor Pringle and Piper Hall won the honor Sunday as the annual Family, Career and Community Leaders of America convention concluded in San Diego. USD 251 announced that Pringle and Hall finished first for their “Chapter in Review Portfolio.”

Annual Fourth of July fireworks show brightens Emporia Sunday night

The city of Emporia lit up the night sky with the annual Fourth of July fireworks display Sunday evening. Once again, Emporia State University hosted the patriotic show with right around 900 fireworks discharged over the course of the 25-minute display. Local pyrotechnician Bernie Toso along with a cadre of volunteers oversaw the event.

Sunday night fireworks planned in Emporia, Cottonwood Falls

City crews in Emporia and Cottonwood Falls spent Sunday preparing for fireworks on the Third of July. Emporia's annual Independence Day show will begin around 9:45 p.m. Sunday. The west side of Welch Stadium will open at 7 p.m. for seating, or viewers can sit on Jones Field with blankets.

Hot days ahead; Emporia Police remind residents to be aware as temperatures start to rise

Emporia’s Vote No rally postponed to July 9

The rainfall from Saturday morning and a risk of lightning led organizers of Emporia’s Vote No rally to postpone the event.
