City Probably Not Going in on Final Phase of Softball Complex

While the Morris School District this week set aside over $200,000 for the fourth and final phase of the Softball Complex project, Morris City Manager Blaine Hill explained on the KMRS Community Connection that though the City contributed to the initial phases of the project they will likely not take a swing at this last stage.

Miss Morris and Miss Midwest Compete for Miss Minnesota

Miss Morris Nicole Gillespie and Miss Midwest Meghan Payne will be competing 7 p.m. tonight in the 2021 Miss Minnesota Scholarship Competition at Grace Church Auditorium in Eden Prairie. A Wahpeton man has been sentenced to more than one year with the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. Cody Christopher Staton, 25, appeared Monday, June 21 before Richland County District Court. Staton entered guilty pleas to one charge of burglary and one charge of possession of stolen property valued between $1,000-$10,000.

City Council Accepts FAA Grant for Airport

The Morris City Council accepted a Federal Aviation Administration grant for the Airport Runway Extension Phase 2 Project at their meeting on Tuesday evening. The $4.6 million federal contract will pay for 100 percent of the project’s costs, although a state grant application has to be filed as a formality. City Manager Blaine Hill told the Council that federal officials are eager to start the work at the Morris Airport.

MORRIS – Willmar erased an early deficit with a big third inning and edged Morris 8-7 in Jr. Legion baseball from Chizek Field in Morris on Tuesday. Morris School Board Votes to Set Aside Money for Phase 4 of Softball Complex

The Morris School Board approved a motion by a 6 to 1 vote to set aside an additional $223,000 for the fourth and final phase of the new Softball Complex on the grounds of the University of Minnesota Morris. In his presentation to the School Board, Bryan Herrmann, U of M Morris Vice Chancellor for Finance and Facilities, said that $977,000 has already been expended for the first three phases of the project, with $90,000 still needed to finish up remaining details like lighting. In describing what the final phase would encompass, Herrmann noted that current construction prices are not favorable to this project.

Verla Ehlke, 89, of Fergus Falls died Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at Pioneer Care. Funeral services were Saturday, June 19, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home of Fergus Falls. Burial was in Riverside Cemetery in Campbell, MN. Visitation was one hour prior to the service. She was born on February 28, 1932 in the Wright Hospital, Fergus Falls, the daughter of Henry and Rose (Fyffe) VanHovel. She was baptized in the First Baptist Church in Breckenridge and attended Campbell Elementary and High School. Verla and Delwin C. Ehlke were married on June 14, 1953 in the First Baptist Church in Campbell, MN. Del was drafted into the U.S. Army, they lived in Ft. Riley, KS and El Paso, TX. Verla returned to Campbell when Del served in Germany. Verla and Del lived in Campbell, then moved to Wendell where they lived until moving to Battle Lake in 1986. Verla was a homemaker who enjoyed raising her children. She had worked at Mendelson Egg Plant in Elbow Lake, she sewed for three years with Rosenblatts, was employed for a short time with Medallion Kitchens, then ten years with Thom Linen, all of Fergus Falls. Verla resided at Pioneer Care for the last six years. Verla enjoyed flowers, gardening and yard work. She did a lot of sewing and craftwork for her family and sewed a lot of her children’s clothing. In her later years, she enjoyed coloring. Verla enjoyed her family and especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a devout Christian and wasn’t afraid to share her faith. She had been a member of the Lawrence Presbyterian Church, Grace Evangelical Free Church of Elbow Lake, Bethel Lutheran Church and the Church of the Nazarene, both of Fergus Falls, the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Battle Lake and Stavanger Lutheran Church of rural Fergus Falls. She is survived by five children: LaRae (George) Stebe of Fergus Falls, Jayne Cunningham of Milwaukee, WI, Julie McColm of Fargo, ND, Phil (Lezli) Ehlke of Bemidji, MN and Wayne (Barb) Ehlke of Aurora, CO; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and her brother, Kenton VanHovel of Fergus Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her sister, Velma M. Angell. Glende-Nilson Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Battle Lake was in charge of arrangements.
