Author, pastor to speak at First Presbyterian

First Presbyterian Church of Mount Airy will be welcoming Dr. David Docusen, founder and director of The Neighborliness Center, to their church on July 17. Docusen has spent the past 20 years working as an author, speaker, pastor, and professor. He lives in Winston-Salem with his wife, Dara, and four teenage children. His new book, “Neighborliness: Love Like Jesus. Cross Dividing Lines. Transform Your Community,” is available at and all major retailers.

July 4th celebrations, Veterans exhibit presentation and more news happening today

Here’s a look at some of the stories we’ll be following today as they make headlines across Southwest Virginia:. The Pulaski County Board of Supervisors and the Pulaski County Courthouse Exhibits Committee will present a new veterans exhibit on the third floor of the Old Pulaski County Courthouse. It’s called, ‘Remembering the Sacrifices for Freedom.’ The exhibit will feature donated items from veterans and their families from various wars. The presentation starts at noon.

Obituary for Peggy Bond Clark

Peggy Bond Clark, age 82 of Pulaski Virginia, passed away at her home on June 30th 2022. She was born on October 16th 1939 in Sylvatus Virginia to the late Bernard and Ida Reynolds Bond. Peggy was a lady of great faith who lived a loving and caring life, caring for others, as well for animals as she did growing up as a child, and as a Registered Nurse in her adult life. She became a Registered Nurse in 1962 when she graduated from the Pulaski Community Hospital Nursing School, where she worked in the Operating Room, for 20 plus years, and as a Nurse at Radford Arsenal Plant Hospital, and several local nursing homes. She enjoyed canning, sewing, cross stitching, crocheting, as well as an excellent play by ear piano player.

Wayne Farms partners with Shepherd’s House

DOBSON — Wayne Farms Dobson recently presented a $5,000 check to the Shepher’ds House to help underwrite the organization’s homeless shelter operation. “But financial support is only one aspect of community partnership for the Dobson team,” the firm said of its donation. “The company has also signed on with Shepherd’s House as a resource for the agency’s Jobs First program, offering training and plant positions to homeless adults and even providing transportation to and from the job.”

With his father, brothers, and sister by his side, Timothy “Timmy” “Rooster” Wayne Freeman, 44, of Pulaski, VA passed away peacefully at Spotsylvania Regional Medical Center in Fredericksburg, VA on July 1, 2022. Born on March 29, 1978 at Pulaski Community Hospital, Timmy is the son of Larry Freeman and the late Annie Freeman.

Billy J. Bramlett was a caring husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He left this world suddenly on June 27, 2022 at age 75. He is survived by his wife of almost 55 years, Janet Ponton Bramlett, and his three children Carla Hale (Husband Joe Hale) of Blacksburg, Todd Bramlett of Christiansburg, and Kimberly Bramlett of Christiansburg. He was very loved by his grandson, Justin Hale, and as a passionate animal lover, Billy also considered his animals Lexie, Blossom, and Fluffy as part of his family, who remained by his side.

Deanna Nichols Boswell, 78 of Floyd, was born unto eternal life on Tuesday, January 4, 2022. Deanna was born on January 21, 1943, in Washington D.C. and resided in Brookville, Maryland during her adolescence and teen years. She attended high school at the Academy of The Holy Cross and graduated from Dunbarton College with a bachelor’s degree in 1965.

Guy French Ellett II, 85, of Riner, passed away on June 29, 2022. He was a veteran of 5 branches of the military and retired as Sergeant First Class from the US Army. Guy was preceded in death by his parents, Robert T. Ellett and Minnie Henderson Ellett; and his grandson, Matthew Thaddeus Ellett. He is survived by his loving wife, Juanita Ellett; son, Kevin Ellett (Anne); daughter, Colleen Farmer (Kyle); grandson, Robert ‘Travis’ Ellett; step-son, Keith Spence (Helen); step-grandsons, Michael and David Spence and Christian (Gus) Farmer; great-grandson Dalton Ellett; sister-in-law, Gerlene Conner (Macle); and brother-in-law, Alvin Hale.

Galax man dies in motorcycle crash in Carroll County

At 9:02 p.m. on Wednesday (June 29), Virginia State Police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 722 a third of a mile east of Route 731. A 2003 Kawasaki ZX-6R motorcycle was traveling east on Route 722 when it lost control and flipped onto its side. It then slid off the roadway and spun around, ejecting the operator in the process. The operator then went down the embankment and into a culvert.
