Dubois, WY

A hiker in the Wind River Range northwest of Dubois is hospitalized in Billings today after being mauled by a bear, believed to have been a grizzly. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department said the attack was apparently a result of the hiker “surprising” the bear. Authorities do not plan on tracking the bear.

Mostly sunny, cooler and a bit breezy today. The southern half of the state will see afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Friday through the weekend will see afternoon convection and warm temperatures. Today’s high temperatures will be mostly in the low-to-mid 80s for the Wind River and Bighorn basins with the mid to upper 70’s at Dubois and Lander. Tonight’s lows mostly in the mid-50s with the mid40s at Dubois.

Mostly sunny skies this morning will give way to increasing clouds in the afternoon and developing showers and thunderstorms. Wednesday will be breezy with more afternoon and evening showers and storms. Today will be a warm one with temperatures in the low 80s for Dubois, the low 90s for the Wind River Basin, Shoshoni and Thermopolis and the upper 90s at Worland.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office reported over the past 72 hours ending at 7 a.m. on 6/27/22, the emergency dispatch center there had taken 126 calls for service. During that same time, the county’s ambulance service was dispatched 65 times and the county’s fire departments were dispatched twice. Twenty-Five persons were booked into the Fremont County Detention Center on charges that included five Driving While Under the Influence charges, 12 other alcohol-related charges, four felony charges and 56 misdemeanor charges. The Fremont County Detention Center current has 175 inmates it is responsible for, and, of these 170 are being held in Lander and five inmates are outside of the facility.

As snow continues to melt off some mountain roads, the Wind River Ranger District of the Shoshone National Forest is limiting travel on the portion of Forest Service Road 515, Barbers Point Road, between Wind River Lake and Brooks Lake Lodge due to remaining areas of snow drifts and heavy mud.

A Santa Barbara cyclist is currently on the adventure of a lifetime as he is biking across the country on a route more than 4,200 miles long. Ed Rodriguez, who previously worked for the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, has been on the road with his bike since May 29, when he started his journey from Bellingham, Washington, following the Adventure Cycling Association’s TransAmerica trail across the country to Annandale, Virginia.

A very warm day with sunshine mixing with clouds. Isolated showers and t-storms will spread from south to north today, any shower or storm could have strong wind gusts. A cold front will bring a better chance of storms on Friday. Today’s high temperatures will be in the mid to upper 80s for the Wind River Basin with the low 90s at Shoshoni, Thermopolis and Worland. Dubois can expect a high near 80. Tonight’s lows mostly in the mid-50s across the area with the upper 40s at Dubois.

Using the fun and user-friend app called “iNaturalist” we developed the Dubois Invasive Species Watch as a Citizen Science Project to help land managers identify the extent of invasive species in the area surrounding Whiskey Basin Wildlife Habitat Management Area and the larger Dubois area. Bighorn sheep are a community-wide iconic wildlife species that depends heavily on intact winter range and migration corridors. Rapidly responding to invasive species infestations will help maintain habitat for this and other wildlife species in the area.

GILLETTE, Wyo. — The premiere episode of Fox Nation’s “Hidden Gems with Laura Ingraham” brings the show’s host to the National Museum of Military Vehicles. The Wyoming museum is found between the Grand Tetons and Yellowstone National Park, south of Dubois in Fremont County. The 140,000-square-foot museum opened in August 2020 and offers “visitors nearly 500 fully restored military vehicles, artillery pieces, naval vessels and aircraft dating from 1897 to the present with a current emphasis on the American experience in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War,” its website states.
