Heat and humidity builds, early storm chance on the 4th

OTTUMWA, Iowa (KYOU) - Things will feel much more summerlike this week across the area, with a chance for some storms to kick off Independence Day. This chance is primarily in the morning hours on Monday, with activity diminishing and shifting to the east after that. Sunshine in the afternoon will push highs back above the 90-degree mark for most. Combined with high dew point readings, expect heat index values to exceed 100 for a period of time on Monday as well. If you’re out celebrating the holiday, make sure to take breaks in air conditioning, drink water, and wear light, loose-fitting clothing.

Twin Cedars Baseball Bows Out Of District

The Twin Cedars Baseball Squad was ushered out of the class 1A District by Southeast Warren on Saturday 12-2. The Sabers kept the game close until the 5th inning when the Warhawks broke it open. Coach Mark Schroeder told KNIA/KRLS Sports Devin Arkema kept them in the game but Southeast Warren was took much in the end. The Sabers finish the season at 9-15.

(KMAland) -- Heelan swept Sioux City West, Kuemper lost a pair of games and Twin Cedars was a winner in KMAland softball on Saturday. Ali Mockenhaupt picked up the win with five innings of relief while Grace Bailey led the offense with four hits, including a three-run home run. Mockenhaupt followed with a home run of her own, and Jillian French added two hits and two RBI. Jetta Sterner also had two hits for the Sabers.

Twin Cedars Softball Defeats Pella Christian in Regular Season Finale

The Twin Cedars and Pella Christian softball teams wrapped up regular season action early Saturday morning, with the Sabers defeating the Eagles 8-6. Twin Cedars outhit Pella Christian in the game 11-6, led by Grace Bailey’s 4-4 day that included a three-run home run. Ali Mockenhaupt also homered for the Sabers and recorded the win in five innings of relief, giving up three earned runs. Jillian French added 2 hits and 2 RBI, while Jetta Sterner had 2 hits and a stolen base.

Warriors rock Falcons 16-4 in first round, sets up rematch with Bulldogs

The Van Buren County Warriors knocked the West Burlington Falcons 16-4 in first-round playoff action, setting the stage for a rematch with the Mediapolis Bulldogs next Tuesday. The Warriors opened up 2A District 11 play with a bang. After both teams went scoreless in the first inning. The Warriors had a big top of the second inning scoring four runs. The inning was highlighted with two-out RBIs from Lukas McEntee, Jackson Manning, Bailey Roen, and Taylor Sprouse. The Warriors lead after the second 4-0 after Manning sat the Falcons down in the second stranding two runners. The Warriors would explode again in the third inning scoring another six runs. The third inning was highlighted by a McEntee sacrifice fly RBI and a 2 RBI single from Taylor Sprouse to give the Warriors the 10-0 lead halfway through the third. Manning would again keep the Falcons scoreless while stranding two runners in the bottom of the third. The Warriors would be held scoreless in the fourth and the Falcons would score two to cut the lead to 10-2 after four. After a scoreless fifth the Warriors and the Falcons would again score two runs to cut the Warrior lead to 10-4. Both teams would be scoreless in the sixth. The Warriors would put the game away with six runs in the top of the seventh. The Warriors got RBIs in the inning from Lucas Fett (2), Tyler Stoltz (2), Bailey Roen (1), and Jackson Manning (1). Sprouse would strike out the side to secure the Warrior win 16-4.

Harvey Man Facing Felony Charges

On June 14, Marion County Sheriff’s Detectives met with the Ottumwa Police Department in regards to a handgun located in their jurisdiction. Officers went to the 100 block of Cinder Avenue, where they spoke with 50-year-old Shawn Duane Gerdom of Harvey. Gordon told officers he had purchased a Chevy Silverado in May and a handgun was a part of the transaction. The truck showed up as stolen from Keokuk County. After running a check on Gerdom, officers found he had a conviction for domestic abuse assault. Gerdom was charged with Dominion/Control of a Firearm or Weapon by a Domestic Abuse Offender, a Class D Felony.

Fire At First Church Of The Nazarene

A fire early Wednesday morning caused significant damage to an Ottumwa church. According to a press release, on Wednesday June 29, 2022 at 4:33 A.M., the Ottumwa Fire Department responded to a call of a building fire at 701 Ellis Ave, location of the First Church Of The Nazarene. All on duty firefighters responded with two fire engines; engine 2 located at Station 2 arrived four minutes after being dispatched and engine 3 from Central Station arrived six minutes after being dispatched.

Iowa man demolishes motorcycle in crash north of Kirksville

A motorcyclist from Moulton, Iowa was hurt Thursday morning when the motorcycle hit the rear of a sports utility vehicle north of Kirksville. Eighteen-year old Clayton Coffman refused treatment at the scene for minor injuries. The driver of the SUV, 44-year old Crystal Brown of Bloomfield, Iowa, was not reported hurt.
