TMFR knock down brush fire in Cold Springs

RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue knocked down a brush fire in Cold Springs. It happened around 10 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, near Mud Springs Road. Firefighters were able to keep it to just over an acre. There were no reported injuries or damage to any structures.

Portola Concerts in the Park return Friday, July 8

The Portola Concerts in the Park are set to return starting Friday, July 8 at 7 p.m., with the first of seven concerts to be the popular Margret’s Funk Band, playing Motown, old favorites and considered ‘great to dance to’ as well. “They were one of our favorites and actually got to perform last year, and didn’t get cancelled from smoke, threat of fire, or Covid,” said organizers.

PUSD honors its retirees; heartfelt tributes for superintendent

The Plumas Unified School District board of trustees honored 19 retirees during its June 22 board meeting, though none were able to attend in person. That didn’t stop their supervisors from lauding them for their service. Portola High School Principal Sara Sheridan began the accolades, acknowledging four individuals. She opened with Robin Adrian-Murray who was retiring after 26 years. Adrian-Murray began her career serving meals to the students in the cafeteria and also taught in the culinary program and the garden. “Her chocolate chip cookies are the stuff of legends,” Sheridan said.

Jasper Schuetz, a rising 9th grader at Piedmont High School, placed first in the Junior Men’s category at the Lost and Found gravel race on June 4. The race was held in the town of Portola, CA in the High Sierra and the ride was 60 miles long on gravel roads.

City of Portola urges residents to prepare for fire and talks budget

The Wednesday, June 8 meeting of the City of Portola city council opened with the pledge of allegiance and then went into public comment. Early morning fire guts Portola home

An early morning fire June 15, completely destroyed one Portola home and reportedly damaged two others. According to the sheriff’s office dispatch center the fire call came in at 12:47 a.m. for the home at 365 3rd Ave. According to records the home belongs to Christian Taylor, who is well known in the area as a medical coordinator for Eastern Plumas Health Care. Fire personnel from the Beckwourth, Eastern Plumas, Graeagle and Sierra Valley fire departments responded to the scene.
