Douglas County adopts plan for future

The Douglas County Board adopted its 2020-2040 Comprehensive Plan on Thursday, June 17, as well as a process to ensure the plan is carried out. The plan serves as a guide to social, physical and economic development of the county. It identifies issues and opportunities, and it sets goals for housing; transportation; utilities and community facilities; agriculture; natural and cultural resources; economic development; intergovernmental cooperation; and land use.

COVID-Shots Coming For Douglas County Jail Inmates

The nationwide push to get "shots in arms" to contain the COVID-19 Pandemic is heading to local jail cells this week. Officials with the Douglas County Health Department are coordinating efforts to get COVID-19 vaccine shots to the inmates at the County Jail. The shots will be administered to those inmates who have requested them; approximately 60 inmates at the jail have registered an interest in receiving a COVID-19 vaccine.

Letter: History good for Superior's future

My sincere thanks and gratitude to the Douglas County Historical Society, Jon Winter and the Superior Telegram for the May 28 articles regarding Superior’s economic history. The articles mentioned included such products as candy, beer, chairs, a creamery, coffee and a building. This just shows that at the turn of the century (about 100 years ago) Superior had a diverse, thriving economy. They also can and should further inspire further growth. Times change, you know.

Maple School Board boosts pay for support staff

As competition for employees mounts in Douglas County, the Maple School District is feeling the squeeze. The School Board voted Monday, June 14 to raise the minimum wage of support staff and middle management to $16 an hour. Those who are currently on the payroll will see a 2% living wage increase, as well as a pay bump of $2.38 per hour. Substitutes will now be paid the full amount, as well. In the past, they made 5% less per hour than full-time employees.

3 Northland COVID-19 deaths reported Wednesday

Two Douglas County residents and an Itasca County resident died of COVID-19, Minnesota and Wisconsin reported Wednesday. The Itasca County resident was between ages 75 and 79 and was one of eight COVID-19-related deaths in Minnesota reported Wednesday. The Minnesota Department of Health reported 150 new cases and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services reported 106 new cases of COVID-19 and 11 deaths on Wednesday.
