Motorcyclist killed in Smyth County crash identified

MARION, Va. — A motorcyclist killed in a single-vehicle crash in Smyth County last Monday evening has been identified as Gary W. Barnett, 74, of Leesburg, Ohio. According to the Virginia State Police, Barnett was driving a 2010 Harley-Davidson Street Glide north on state Route 16, just north of Marion, when the motorcycle ran off the left side of the road and struck a guardrail. Barnett, who was wearing a helmet, died at the scene, the VSP said.

Woman pleads guilty to $669K unemployment scheme

ABINGDON, Va. — As expected, a southwestern Virginia woman pleaded guilty Monday to charges related to a nearly $700,000 unemployment scheme. Farren Ricketts, 30, of Jonesville, pleaded guilty to mail fraud, aggravated identity theft and conspiracy to defraud the United States. She admitted to filing more than 100 fraudulent unemployment claims for herself, family and friends, and then setting up a business to file fraudulent claims for clients for a fee.
