Miss D’s scholarship fund needs your help

I have been thinking about Jean Dugat, the excellent English and journalism teacher at A. C. Jones High School who taught me how to write – and who was also my good friend. Brenda de la Rosa, director of the Joe Barnhart Scholarship Program, called to let me know that the scholarship fund set up in Miss D’s name (and that was how she was known to her students and many friends for much of her 39-year teaching career at JHS) after she died in 1990 was a bit short of money for this year’s scholarship. I was able to supplement it for this year, but it will need contributions by other former students and friends if it is to be given again.

Updog Pizza helps reward OEISD readers

Recently, the Odem-Edroy ISD campus libraries partnered with Updog Pizza in Odem to reward students for reading. The top readers for each grade level were given a certificate for a free 12-inch pepperoni and cheese pizza from Updog Pizza. Twelve students were rewarded after the fourth six weeks grading period. The first winners were from Odem Junior High campus with future winners will be announced on the district social media sites.

Odem club celebrates 30-year lion

On Monday, March 21, the Odem Area Lions Club celebrated the 30th Lions Service Anniversary of one of its members, lion Zelma Champion. Past District Governor David Christopher of Kingsville presented the Lions Clubs International 30 Year Service Award. Champion started her Lions service in the Corpus Christi Industrial Noon Lions Club in 1991, held leadership positions for a majority of her years, was the director of the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Center in Corpus Christi for almost eight years and currently serves as a region chairperson for Lions District 2-A3.
