Candidate forum to be held at DWU Sherman Center Tuesday evening

A candidate forum will be held this evening at 6 PM at the Sherman Center on the Dakota Wesleyan University campus. District 20 House candidates Lance Koth, Ben Krohmer, and Jeff Bathke have been invited to participate, as have Mitchell School Board candidates Deb Olson, Tim Moon, Jeff Sand, Terry Aslesen, David Lambert, and Chris Foster. Davison County Auditor Sue Kiepke will moderate the forum. The candidates will answer questions asked by a media panel. Selected questions from the audience may also be asked. Tonight’s candidate forum is free and open to the public. It is sponsored by the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce Governmental Affairs Committee.

Mitchell City Council to consider downtown building window replacement, Lake Mitchell Restoration Project Phase II agreement

The Mitchell City Council meets at 6 PM at City Hall in downtown Mitchell. The agenda includes action to approve a quote for the replacement of several windows on the third and fourth floors in the downtown Mitchell building which formerly housed the Crafty Fox. The city owned the building and had applied for grants to help repair the windows. The building has since been sold to a California man, but the city must still approve the repairs and the contractor who will perform the work. Deadwood grant funds in the amount of $40,000 were awarded to the city for the window work.

Mitchell man’s trial for refusing to leave the school board postponed

MITCHELL, S.D.(KMIT)- The trial scheduled for Monday for a Mitchell man who did not comply with a mask mandate at a Mitchell School Board meeting in September 2020 and refused to leave when asked to do so has been postponed. No makeup date announced. Reed Bender is charged with a Class 2 misdemeanor count of entering or refusing to leave property after notice. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 30 days in jail; however, Davison County State’s Attorney Jim Miskimins says he is not seeking jail time for Bender. Judge Kasey Sorenson will decide the case after denying Bender’s request for a jury trial. A previous jury trial on a different charge against Bender ended up in a hung jury late last year.

SD man living in Ukraine says US help making impact

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A former Mitchell man living in Ukraine says help from the U.S. and other western countries is allowing Ukraine to beat back the Russian invasion. Brian Bonner works as an international journalist and is the former editor of the Kyiv Post newspaper. Brian Bonner says the capital city where he lives, once under siege by Russian forces, is getting back to some sense of normalcy.
