Man sentenced 52 years ago for northern Iowa crimes has died in prison

FORT MADISON — A man sent to prison for his involvement in a 1969 crime spree in northern Iowa has died in the Iowa State Penitentiary. According to Iowa court records, Elvin Gilroy was one of four men who broke out of a jail in St. Cloud, Minnesota in June of 1969. They stole a county car, ditched that vehicle and stole another car. They made their way south and robbed a grocery store in Spirit Lake, a filling station in Emmetsburg and the Fareway Store in Algona. Melvin Bay, the store manager in Algona, was shot during the robbery. He died ten days later.

Sutherland gets new police officer again

SUTHERLAND—The city of Sutherland’s almost two-month stretch without a police officer is at an end. The city council hired 23-year-old Adam McQueen of Cherokee to be the southern O’Brien County community’s sole officer during a special meeting Tuesday, June 21. He was sworn in following the meeting.

Everly Woman Hurt in Crash Involving Motorcycle East of Spencer

Spencer, IA (KICD)—An Everly woman was hurt in crash involving a motorcycle Sunday afternoon east of Spencer. The Iowa State Patrol says the motorcycle, operated by 39-year-old Heather Dillingham was westbound on Highway 18 near the intersection of County Road N-14 around 1:30 when a southbound vehicle driven by 31-year-old Sara Murphy of Springfield, Illinois reportedly pulled out in front of her leading to the collision.

Iowa Union veteran honored in Sutherland

SUTHERLAND—James Patterson Martin of Sutherland was not just the last surviving Civil War veteran in O’Brien County but the last living Iowan soldier from that war. He died more than 70 years ago at age 101; however, Iowa’s Department of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War honored his memory with a ceremony on Saturday, June 18, at Waterman Cemetery in Sutherland.

Tom Powers, 91, of Spencer Formerly of Hartley

Private family graveside services for 91-year-old Tom Powers of Spencer, formerly of Hartley, will be held at a later date at Pleasant View Cemetery in Hartley. Warner Funeral Home in Spencer is in charge of the arrangements.

Estherville Garage Destroyed by Weekend Fire

Estherville, IA (KICD)—A garage in Estherville appears to have been destroyed by a fire that broke out over the weekend. Firefighters were called to 708 ½ 5th Avenue South around 10:45 Saturday evening. The caller told dispatchers the garage was already fully engulfed in flames with a police officer reporting siding was also starting to melt on another nearby structure.

Zimmerman funeral services announced

Funeral services for Mark Zimmerman, 56, of Spencer will be held Friday, July 8 at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, Marshfield. A visitation will be held on Thursday, July 7 from 2 to 8 p.m. at the Lucille Tack Center at Spencer High School and on Friday, July 8 at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of service. A live stream of the services will be carried on the Faith Lutheran Church-Marshfield YouTube channel. Rembs Funeral Home, Marshfield, is assisting the family. Burial will be at Thompson Valley Cemetery near Osseo at 4 p.m. Zimmerman died peacefully at his home on June 29, after a 4 ½-year battle with cancer.

Drought Concerns Return As June Ends Warm and Dry
