Local Students Dive into Reading to Prevent 'Summer Slide'

Florida Power and Light (FPL) has teamed up with Anna Maria Oyster Bar’s "Dive Into Reading" program to help hundreds of local students prevent the “Summer Slide.” The annual literacy program, which kicked off earlier this month, works with students from local Title I schools to increase children’s literacy levels during summer break while enjoying a hot breakfast. FPL helped fund more than 2,500 books to be distributed to more than 550 rising second- and third-grade students from all 15 Title I schools in Manatee and Desoto counties.

All Faiths Food Bank Working to Fill the Summer Hunger Gap

In order to reach as many area children as possible, All Faiths Food Bank works with numerous partners, including Sarasota and DeSoto County Schools’ Food and Nutrition Services (FNS). During FNS distributions at select school campuses, All Faiths provides supplemental food resources: backpacks filled with healthy foods and snacks and boxes of fresh produce. The next school distributions take place on Tuesday, June 22, 9-11am at Fruitville Elementary School and North Port and Venice High Schools. Commissioners pressure Mosaic for answers
