USAN announces downtown Niagara Falls development strategy

USA Niagara Development Corp. (USAN) on Thursday released its strategy for the redevelopment of several state-owned properties in downtown Niagara Falls acquired through Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Buffalo Billion initiative. The strategy recommends a range of intermediate steps and attainable site development guidelines for “reimagining a vibrant downtown, while building momentum for sustainable and dynamic long-term development.”

Man shot and killed at corner of Genesee and Sawyer streets

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Police are investigating another homicide on the streets of Rochester — the second in as many days. The Rochester Police Department says officers responded to the corner of Genesee and Sawyer streets around 7 p.m. Thursday for a report of shots fired. When they arrived, they say they found a man in his 20s suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Woman admits murdering Niagara Falls man in her apartment

Tramaine Sanchez of Niagara Falls pleaded guilty Tuesday to murdering a man in her Packard Court apartment Nov. 16. Niagara Falls City Judge Diane L. Vitello promised to limit Sanchez's prison sentence to 20 years to life for second-degree murder and conspiracy. The judge scheduled sentencing Aug. 10 but said it could be sooner.

Niagara County announces Project Awareness pharmacy label campaign

The Niagara County Department of Mental Health & Substance Abuse Services (NCDMH), in partnership with the Niagara County Opioid Task Force (OASIS) and local pharmacies, on Thursday announced the launch of Project Awareness, a campaign to provide the Niagara County Crisis Services 24-hour phone line number on prescription medications that have a high potential for abuse and overdose. The goal is to raise awareness that help is available – any time, any day – for individuals who may have substance use concerns or may be considering taking the medications with an intent to harm themselves.

Gunshot fired at Niagara Falls police officer investigating gunfire

A Niagara Falls police officer said they were shot at while investigating the sound of gunshots on the 600 block of 20th Street at 3 a.m. Tuesday. Officers said they were in an alley in the area of 19th and Pine Avenue for another call when they heard multiple gunshots coming from the area of 20th Street. The officers hurried to the location on foot as more gunshots sounded. While running across the street on the 600 block of 20th, one of the officers said he saw a muzzle flash in his direction from the alley behind a house. The officer said he wasn’t hit and continued running toward the suspect.
