Hotchkiss ‘thankful’ for Sheriff’s department assistance

Delta County Sheriff’s Office will provide backup service for the Hotchkiss Marshal’s Office at no charge. The good news was announced by Mayor Larry Wilkening during the June 10 town council meeting. Wilkening told the council that he had several meetings with Delta County Sheriff Mark Taylor discussing the need for coverage.

Former Delta resident debuts first novel June 26

Former Delta resident Justin Charles Stauffer is releasing his first novel and will be in town on June 26 for a book launch event. Stauffer, his wife Diana, and their three boys — Riordin, Raffi and Bode — lived in Delta for several years and ran Raising Hope, a nonprofit thrift store on Eaton Avenue that benefitted Delta County Young Life and The Abraham Connection Homeless Shelter. The family now lives near Columbus, Ohio.

As of Monday, June 14, Delta County remains in the “Green — Protect Our Neighbor” status overall; however, the county’s one week case rate with 131.52 cases per 100,000 persons has moved into the “yellow”- concern stage. Also trending up is the one week case rate at 40 new cases, also moving into the “yellow’ concern stage and the one week positivity rate has climbed to 3.53% moving into the caution or “blue” stage.

A look into Snow Capped Cider and new product at this year’s Applefest

Less than four months until Applefest and still a bulk of the planning to go, Delta County’s most consistently populous festival still holds the name of the Surface Creek Valley’s fruit industry. With that in mind, Kari Williams, of Snow Capped Cider in Cedaredge, announced that, in honor of the area’s heritage, some brand new competition-worthy ciders are planned to be released in July, ultimately featured at Applefest in early October.

Climate change is real and impacting earth

With Delta County in exceptional drought, Michael Cox spent his June 2 column bashing climate science, describing normal weather, and proclaiming good news that Kiawah Island is still above sea level and Midwest states are wetter than average. Cox mocked those who believe humans are “more powerful than the mechanics that operate the big blue marble,” implying that humans are incapable of altering the global environment. Perhaps he’s not aware that global fish populations have plummeted more than 50% over the last 50 years due to overfishing, or that 200 years of industrial carbon dioxide emissions have made our oceans 30% more acidic. There’s no question mankind affects global change.

Sex-abuse suit bill marks a ‘significant shift’

Recently passed legislation takes square aim at institutions that helped cover up child sexual abuse. Senate Bill 88, co-sponsored in the House by Rep. Matt Soper, R-Delta County, cleared both chambers of the state Legislature last week and is headed to the governor’s desk, where Soper expects it to receive a signature.

Delta County considers fire restrictions

Delta County Commissioners are considering entering fire restrictions at the recommendation of Delta County Sheriff Mark Taylor and other fire agencies. Taylor made a brief report to commissioners during the board’s regular meeting on June 15. He said last week fire officials in the region were ready to make a decision. As of Monday the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) made plans to move into fire restrictions Wednesday at midnight.
