On Aug. 7, a 4-year-old girl found a gun in her mother’s car and fatally shot herself. The mother was initially charged with second-degree cruelty to children. On Aug. 9, Dekalb County court officials said that the mother, 26-year-old Kaelin Lewis, is now facing a second-degree murder charge after she failed to secure the firearm in her car.

Missing 11-year-old girl found safe

--- DeKalb County police are asking for help in the search for an 11-year-old girl. Karol Lopez was last seen around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday on North DeKalb Drive in Doraville. Lopez is Hispanic, standing 4'8" tall and weighing about 80 pounds. She has brown eyes and black, curly hair. Lopez was last wearing a black shirt, black pants, and had a green backpack.

Fugitive Wanted in Dekalb Co for Homicide Arrested in Bulloch

After being on the lam for several months, a man wanted in Dekalb County in connection with a homicide was arrested Monday in Statesboro. Statesboro Police Department Impact Team had received information over the past couple of weeks that the fugitive, Ronnie Jones Jr, had returned to Statesboro. U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force had been working the case. They, along with SPD, located Jones and took him into custody. He remains at the Bulloch County Jail awaiting extradition to Dekalb County. A female associated with Jones was also arrested and charged with Hindering the Apprehension of a Fugitive.

Two employees charged with abusing child at day care center in Clarkston

Two employees of a day care center in Clarkston have been charged with cruelty to children after video footage appeared to show a child being thrown to the ground. On Aug. 5, officials with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office reported that the two child abuse suspects, Autumn Coney, 44, and Bernetta Glover, 21, surrendered without incident to the custody of the DeKalb County Jail.
