Mendota man arrested after Peru gun incident

PERU – A Mendota man is in custody after an investigation into an attempted car theft in Peru. The Peru Police Department say that on Sunday morning they were called to the 2000 Block of 4th St. for a call of a man allegedly attempting to steal a vehicle. The vehicle owner confronted the individual, who then reportedly brandished a handgun. After an investigation, authorities took 26-year-old Ryan J. Johnson of Mendota into custody on a charge of Unlawful Possession of a Weapon. Peru Police noted the Glock handgun allegedly used in the incident was reported stolen out of Peoria. Johnson was taken to the LaSalle County Jail with bond yet to be set.

Neponset Historical Society puts $5,000 grant to good use with upgrades

Ongoing Illinois 251 project will reduce lanes in Mendota

MENDOTA – The ongoing project to rebuild Illinois Route 251 through Mendota will cause some lane reductions beginning Wednesday. The Mendota Police Department say that starting Wednesday the road will be down to one lane only at the viaduct on the south edge of the city. Motorists should expect delays. The project, that includes resurfacing, new sidewalk ramps, and curbing, is expected to be completed by the end of summer.

Mendota Man Held on Gun Charge Following Peru Incidents

25-year-old Ryan Johnson of Mendota faces at least one charge – illegal possession of a firearm by a felon – following an incident in Peru early Sunday morning. Just after 4:30, Peru police started hearing from a number of people about a suspicious vehicle and a loud “bang” sound in the southwestern part of the city. While they were looking into the matter, police were dispatched to the 2000 block of Fourth Street, on suspicion of an attempted vehicle theft. Officers learned that the suspect had pointed a handgun at the vehicle's owner. Within 15 minutes, Johnson was found nearby with a Glock handgun that had been stolen from Peoria. They also determined that an accident had occurred in the area. State's Attorney Todd Martin is reviewing the case and could add more charges.

QB Club plans golf outing

MENDOTA – The Mendota Quarterback Club will be sponsoring a public fund-raising event Friday, June 17 at the Mendota Golf Course with its 21st annual QB Club Golf Outing. The cost is $100 per person with steak dinner included.
